What are the responsibilities and job description for the Youth Director position at St. Mark's United Methodist Church?
The goal of this position is to guide the faith development of children (0-12) and youth (13 -18) by partnering with them, their families, and other church members to coordinate activities and experiences that are age appropriate using scripture, spiritual practices, prayer, community building fun, and teaching in the tradition of The United Methodist Church.
Duties and responsibilities
Sunday Morning Ministry
· Be present every Sunday morning to:
o Teach and facilitate Sunday School for children and/or youth
o Prepare lesson materials in advance
o Build relationships with students and families through consistent presence
· Support youth-led worship services on 4th Sundays, including:
o Planning with youth
o Coordinating readings, prayers, or leadership roles
o Collaborating with the Pastor on liturgy and flow
Planning & Coordination
· Meet regularly with the Pastor for planning, alignment, and pastoral coordination
· Plan ahead for special services and seasons, including:
o Easter
o Christmas
o Other youth-inclusive worship moments as identified by the Pastor
· Maintain a simple forward-looking plan, so seasonal needs are anticipated rather than reactive
Communication with Parents & Families
· Serve as the primary point of contact for parents related to youth ministry
· Share regular updates through:
o A short entry in the church newsletter
o Occasional direct communication as needed (email or similar)
· Communicate clearly about schedules, expectations, and upcoming youth participation
Additional Responsibilities
The Youth Director may also support the broader life of the church by:
· Encouraging youth participation in worship and church events
· Coordinating with volunteers as needed for Sunday programming
· Supporting age-appropriate faith development activities when feasible
· Participating in occasional staff or leadership meetings related to youth ministry
Time Commitment & Schedule
· 8 hours per week, salaried
· Sunday morning presence is required
· Some flexibility during the week for preparation, meetings, and communication
· Presence is required for Easter and Christmas services
Reporting & Accountability
· Reports to the Senior Pastor
· Works collaboratively with church leadership and Choir Director
· Receives a yearly review based on scope, clarity, and sustainability of the role
Qualifications
· Experience working with children and/or youth in a faith-based setting
· Ability to teach scripture in the tradition of the United Methodist Church
· Strong communication and planning skills
· Reliability, consistency, and relational presence
Hours and Compensation
· The position is salaried and 8 hours per week.
· This position reports to the Senior Pastor and SPRC. The Youth Pastor will meet regularly with the Senior Pastor. Yearly review with Senior Pastor and SPRC.
