The Student Nurse Extern is responsible for providing health care to patients working closely with members of the health care team collecting data and implementing patient care. In periodic, designated observation opportunities with a designated RN, the Student Nurse Extern is exposed to aspects of the RN role where s/he is able to participate in the coordination and provision of individualized, quality patient care based on the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Follows treatment plan as directed by licensed personnel.
* Performs the following tasks as assigned: vital signs, intake and output measurements, Glucometry, phlebotomy, specimen collection, patient ADLs (bathing, oral care, toileting, feeding, mobility/ambulation, etc.), restocking supplies and checking and/or cleaning equipment.
* Assists with the admitting process and documents on admission database as appropriate.
* Performs continual observations (1:1) as assigned
* Performs necessary functions to ensure patient comfort and satisfaction with service.
* Accepts responsibility for providing safe, appropriate, quality patient care.
* Communicates changes in patients' conditions to the RN.
* Documentation for all assigned responsibilities
* Maintains responsibility for own professional development through active participation in in-services and/or continuing education programs as appropriate.
* Complies with established chain of command for work related problems.
PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
Stands for up to 10 hours per day; 8 hours at a time. Walks 6 hours per day; 10 minutes at a time. Sits up to 7 hours per day; 1 hour at a time. Consistently lifts, carries and pushes objects up to 10 lbs. Occasionally lifts, carries and pushes objects up to 75 lbs. Transports patients weighing up to 250 lbs. via wheelchair, bed and/or stretcher. Frequently stoops and bends. Frequently reaches above shoulder level. Must be able to perceive attributes of an object trough touch. Must be able to hear as it relates to normal conversation, and high and low frequencies. Must be able to see as it relates to general, near, far, color and peripheral vision.
EDUCATION:
High School graduate or equivalent. Currently enrolled in a baccalaureate nursing program having successfully completed junior year (two written clinical instructor references) and entering senior year of nursing program.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Current BLS/CPR certification. Attends St. Luke's University Health Network orientation for this position.
