Position: Director of Youth Ministry

Reports To: Senior Pastor

FLSA Status; Job status: Exempt; Full Time

Job Duties

  • Develop and oversee ministry for grades 6-12. This includes but is not necessarily limited to the following:
  • Plan and lead confirmation program and retreats
  • Plan and lead high school retreats
  • Plan and assist with Confirmation Service
  • Organize and lead summer experiences
  • Plan and lead High School Youth Groups
  • Plan and lead the high school mission trip
  • Assist Coordinator of Children and Middle School Ministries with 8thGrade Summer Experience.
  • Assist with Sunday worship services, including particularly the Confirmation volunteers.
  • Meet with and support youth, youth workers, and youth volunteers.
  • Inspire others through a commitment to Christ and a life of service in God’s word.
  • Ensure background checks are performed and educate all adults on protocol when working with youth.
  • Coordinate with the Children, Youth & Family (CYF) ministries at all times, to include working with the CYF team and attending meetings with the team.
  • Oversee and incorporate the two ministry teams (Youth and Children, and Early Childhood).
  • Plan, lead, and attend various trips, retreats, and events. This may include but is not limited to confirmation retreat, mission trips, camps, and day events/activities.
  • Ensure that mechanisms are in place so that all children and youth grow in their spiritual life in an environment that is both physically and emotionally safe.
  • Oversee the Student Leadership Program
  • Foster relationships with the South-Central Synod of Wisconsin and the ELCA.
  • Annual continuing education as approved by the Senior Pastor.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to lead a strong Youth Ministry with enthusiasm, creativity, and boundless energy.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and implement activities and programs with minimal supervision. Strong organizational skills are a must (self-starter, detail-oriented, multi-tasking, and can delegate).
  • Ability to lead the congregation in faith-based, spiritually uplifting worship services and to effectively relate to children and their families through education, counseling and outreach.
  • Ability to speak well, persuasively, and inspirationally in public settings.
  • Ability to think creatively, to dream new approaches as necessary to Youth Ministry.
  • Liberal understanding of the Christian faith that embraces and communicates a theology that is accepting, exciting, and open to frank discussions with youth about their doubts, hopes and faith.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and a good driving record.
  • Must have good computer skills and an ability to work within social media.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Word, create PowerPoint presentations, manage an Excel worksheet.

Education/Experience

  • Lutheran theological grounding.
  • Prior experience in youth leadership is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Communication

  • Strong written communication skills, both internally and with respect to the public.
  • Persuasive and engaging communication style.
  • Ability to interact effectively with professional staff and volunteers.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to work as part of a team.
  • Confidentiality is imperative.

Decision Making/Problem Solving

  • Ability to solve problems quickly and efficiently, independently or in collaboration with others, while keeping Program staff and Pastors advised.

Physical Demands

This position requires the ability to do one or more of the following throughout the day: stand, walk, run, sit, bend, and reach above and below shoulder level. It also requires the ability to directly engage with older children and teens in the types of physical activities commonly associated with those ages.

This position also requires the ability to drive, sometimes long distances.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $50,000.00 - $60,000.00 per year
