What are the responsibilities and job description for the Preschool Substitute Teacher position at St. Luke's Early Childhood Program?
Organizational Overview:
St. Luke’s Early Childhood program is a weekday, play-based program that creates learning opportunities through play supporting their development of social and cognitive skills. We serve children ages 10 months through age five. This part-time program is Monday through Friday; one to five days a week available. Smaller classes allow for more one-on-one nurturing & teaching.
Position Overview:
The Substitute teacher is responsible for maintaining a safe and developmentally appropriate program in accordance with all policies and procedures set forth in the Staff Handbook. Substitute teachers must be flexible, highly energetic, and focused on providing a loving and engaging environment for children. The ability to be a team player (with co-teachers and staff), follow daily schedules and lesson plans, and engage with children of various ages and their families.
Responsibilities:
· Supervise children and ensure a safe, loving environment, with routine and consistency.
· Care for children that can be physically demanding such as lifting and carrying children, spending time on the floor, and maneuvering around the room quickly during supervision.
· Also caring for children in stressful situations, including but not limited to—
high noise levels, children who are ill, specific smells related to toileting, changing diapers, and emergency situations.
· Maintain a clean environment and assist with upkeep of the classroom, cleaning of toys, and sustain organized teacher work areas and shared spaces.
· Maintain a high level of professional behavior that models the Christian values of St. Luke’s, including maintaining a high level of confidentiality and respect for others.
· Expectations of a substitute are similar to those of a teacher, but without the planning piece, staff meetings, and outside interactions/communication.
· Notification of needed substitute can be months in advance or the morning of, so to be included on the substitute list, there must be some flexibility.
· Substitutes who accept assignments are expected to serve in those assignments. Substitutes who cancel three or more assignments or are late/leave early three or more times, will be removed from the substitute list.
· Substitutes are paid a flat rate of $70/day for the 8:30am-1:15pm timeframe and are paid on a monthly basis. Substitutes are paid as outside contractors (no taxes are withheld).
Qualifications:
Substitute teachers must have a High School Diploma/GED or higher, and experience with young children. The Substitute Teacher should have willingness to learn, implement and support child-centered, developmentally appropriate curriculum using the Indiana Foundations and NAEYC standards. Substitute teachers must complete a national background check and submit a negative TB test. Background checks are repeated annually.
