The St. Louis County Director of Judicial Administration is accepting applications for a Staff Attorney (Law Clerk). This position reports to the Director of Legal Department and will provide legal research and writing assistance to judges, court administrators, and the Circuit Clerk on a variety of complex legal issues.
This is a 2-year term limited position with an expected start date of August 2026.
Primary responsibilities for this position include conducting a variety of legal research and writing legal memoranda, judgments, and opinions for judges and court administrators.
The starting salary is between $23.10 - $34.66 hourly, depending upon the candidate's experience.
Examples of Duties
SELECTION AND APPOINTMENT: A selection committee will evaluate the qualifications of each applicant which will include recentness and appropriateness of the applicant's education and experience, answers to the supplemental questions, results of employment references investigated and any other appropriate information available. The selection committee will admit to the interview only those persons who possess the most job-related qualifications and may establish admittance criteria beyond the minimum qualifications stated above. The interview will comprise 100% of the applicant's earned grade. A candidate must earn a qualifying grade of 70 or more on the interview to be eligible for appointment. After initial interviews with the selected candidates are conducted, an email will be sent to the address on file with instructions on how to complete and submit a Conviction Questionnaire. Candidates have 3 days to complete the required questionnaire. The five top ranking candidates, based on the final grade, will be certified to the Department Director/Appointing Authority who will make the final decision. All applicants conditionally offered a merit position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Screening will be performed by a reputable clinical laboratory. The cost of screening will be covered by the County.

- Provides research assistance to the Associate Circuit, Circuit Court judges, and court administrators.
- Presents appropriate written or oral recommendations for resolution of legal questions.
- Confers with the Associate Circuit, Circuit Court judges, and court administrators to explain legal research followed and recommendations made for resolution.
- Assists Associate Circuit and Circuit Court judges during the course of a trial or hearing when necessary, including the drafting of judgments and/or opinions for review.
- Compiles references on laws and decisions necessary for legal determination.
- Periodically evaluates the merit for writs of habeas corpus.
- Researches legal issues for court administrators.
- Performs related work as required.
- Applicants must have graduated from an accredited law school (at the time of employment begins) and be licensed to practice law in the state of Missouri (or operate under Rule 13)
- Requires membership in the Missouri Bar Association
