Primary Responsibilities
Reporting to the Director of CSTEP and the McNair Scholars Program, the Program Counselor will collaborate with students, faculty and alumni mentors and role models, and community partners to provide opportunities to participate in career preparation activities, including exploring all facets of the graduate school application process. CSTEP services lead to employment and/or graduate level study in science, technology, math, and engineering (STEM) professions, the New York State licensed professions, and health-related fields. McNair Scholars participate in mentored research-intensive experiences, graduate school visits and workshops, and professional conferences. McNair services are designed to inspire students and support them in pursuing the post-baccalaureate study towards a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in their chosen field of interest.

Duties/Responsibilities:
Primary responsibilities are 1) to recruit program scholars and assist to maintain the required minimum participation enrollment, 2) plan and execute an annual schedule of program seminars and events, and instruct workshops on a weekly basis, 3) ensure each participant completes an individualized educational/professional plan, and 4) assist students with internship and service-learning experience applications. Specifically, the Program Counselor will advertise and facilitate activities, instruct weekly workshops, collaborate to plan events related to student recruitment timelines and implementation, academic success, service-learning, scholar research skill development, and post-baccalaureate planning, while achieving program required activities and objectives. The Program Counselor will be responsible for activities in compliance with project requirements, including providing and facilitating access to and completion of:
  • Research or other scholarly activities, including summer research internships
  • Seminars and other educational activities
  • Tutoring, as needed
  • Academic counseling and mentoring
  • Assistance in securing admission to graduate school
  • Assistance in securing financial aid to graduate school

Other responsibilities:
  • Track the academic progress of program participants and compile project documentation for use in the preparation of annual reports.
  • Provide direct support services to enhance student success through regular individual check-ins with program scholars.
  • Assist scholars to research and apply for internship and national scholarship and fellowship opportunities in support of graduate school study.
  • Plan travel with scholars for graduate school visits and conference presentations.
  • Implement summer research program and the Community of Graduate Scholars (COGS) seminar, including assisting scholars to develop a summer portfolio.
  • Participate in and represent the University programs on- and off-campus at professional development events, conferences, and regional meetings and trainings.
  • Perform other duties identified in the project work plans, and as assigned by the Project Director, as well as those identified in the Project Work Plan.
This position is subject to the availability of funding. Federal and NY State funders review project performance to determine program continuation status on a yearly basis. Average 30 weekly hours.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in counseling or a STEM-related field, education, or other relevant discipline. Experience working with first generation, low-income college students.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including social media and intermediate computer skills (Microsoft Office 365).
  • A willingness to adjust work hours for occasional travel and student programming.
  • A New York State driver’s license and ability to become a campus certified driver.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in counseling.
  • 3-5 years of work experience in career services, student advising, or academic support services.
