The Assistant Director of the Bookstore is responsible for assisting in the general management of the Bookstore. Responsibilities include supervision of operations and staff, training, scheduling, administering student employee scheduling and payroll and managing workflow. Enhance and support purchasing operations making recommendations and decisions. Respond courteously to customer inquiries. Prepare reports, assist with inventory planning and execution, promote sales events, orders, supplies and related retail and administrative duties. The person in the position will perform store opening and closing duties and hours of work vary and include weekends.

- Primary Supervisor for day-to-day front-end management of Bookstore
- Recruit, train and schedule Bookstore and student staff.
- Update, develop and implement a formalized training program for all students, including customer service training, PCI training and general training of Bookstore systems and processes.
- Assist with strategizing, execution and advertising on- and off-site store sales events.
- Strategize workflow and assist with managing staff during peak periods.
- Assist with procedure development, implementation, and enforcement.
- Respond to customer inquiries as they arise.
- Confer with department clerks regarding issues, opportunities and goals in their respective areas.
- Prepare various reports to inform decision-making as needed.
- Be available to perform store closing and opening duties several days per week as seasonal schedules dictate.
- Oversees inventory management, including conducting periodic cycle counts and verifications to ensure accuracy. Performs inventory control though cycle counts and working with buyers on any negative on hands.
- Confirms proper entry, removal, and recording of merchandise in the inventory system.
- Assists in leading the annual inventory process. Provide backup to Bookstore AP Clerk Position as needed.
- Backup duties to all staff as needed.
Standard Sales Associate Duties (expected of all Bookstore personnel)
- Provide the highest level of customer service; ensure proper quality control of merchandise, maintain forms and cash levels, keep checkout area neat and orderly. Maintain secure point-of-sale and monitor security system. Respond to customer needs, box or wrap merchandise, promote good will between store/University and the customer/public.
- Provide first line sales floor security: Maintain awareness of potential shop lifting, respond to perceived shop lifting activities, respond to security gate alarms.
- Cashier Support: Oversee, train, and support student employees while working at cash registers and the front service desk. Train full-time employees on the operation of the POS and cashier processes.
- Shipping/Receiving: Provide backup and assistance with preparing shipments and appropriate documentation for returns, mail orders, and other shipments.
- Associate’s degree in related field and at least 3 years management/supervisory experience in a retail setting. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered for those with extensive relevant retail management experience.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate employees toward a common goal. A track record of fostering positive change and delivering favorable outcomes, the ability to produce quantitative analysis, both operationally and financially and the acumen to navigate a complex work environment.
- Knowledge of merchandising, advertising, marketing, promotion, and display.
Technology
- Broad, very strong, technology background required with experience working in a technology driven work environment.
- Detailed knowledge of retail operations including retail accounting systems/procedures, electronic Point-of-Sale/inventory.
- Experience training and supporting employees in the use of technology.
- Experience creating reports and analyzing data.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and experience with other Microsoft Office Applications.
