Position Summary
The Second Grade Teacher is responsible for creating a nurturing, structured classroom that promotes academic growth, Catholic values, and the social-emotional development of every child. This position includes preparing students for the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion while delivering engaging instruction aligned with diocesan and state standards. Catholic schools commonly expect second-grade teachers to play a central role in sacramental preparation and school faith life.
Essential Responsibilities
Instruction & Curriculum
Plan and deliver engaging daily lessons in all core subject areas.
Implement evidence-based literacy instruction with a strong understanding of the UFLI Foundations phonics program.
Teach handwriting and cursive writing using explicit, systematic instruction.
Differentiate instruction to meet the academic needs of all learners.
Utilize assessment data to guide instruction and monitor student growth.
Integrate technology appropriately to enhance student learning.
Catholic Identity
Foster a classroom environment rooted in Gospel values.
Prepare students for the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion in collaboration with the parish and Religious Education program.
Participate in school Masses, prayer services, retreats, and other faith-based activities.
Support and uphold the mission and philosophy of Saint Joseph School.
Classroom Environment
Establish a safe, welcoming, and organized classroom.
Maintain high expectations for student behavior using positive classroom management techniques.
Build strong relationships with students while encouraging responsibility, kindness, and respect.
Communication
Maintain open, timely communication with parents and guardians.
Conduct parent-teacher conferences and communicate student progress regularly.
Collaborate with administration, specialists, and fellow faculty members to support student success.
Professional Responsibilities
Attend faculty meetings, professional development sessions, and school events.
Maintain accurate student records, grades, and attendance.
Fulfill all responsibilities outlined in the Saint Joseph School Faculty Handbook.
Support extracurricular activities and school community events as needed.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education or a related field.
Rhode Island teaching certification (or ability to obtain certification).
Experience teaching elementary students preferred.
Strong knowledge of:
UFLI Foundations
Evidence-based reading instruction
First Communion preparation
Teaching cursive handwriting
Excellent classroom management, communication, and organizational skills.
Ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, families, and administration.
Commitment to supporting the mission and values of Catholic education.
Preferred Qualifications
Practicing Catholic or willingness to actively support and uphold the teachings and mission of the Catholic Church.
Previous experience in a Catholic school.
Familiarity with educational technology and data-driven instruction.
