Position Summary

The Sterile Processing Assistant, under the indirect supervision of the Nurse Manager and Lead Tech, provides the duties of Sterile Processing. These duties include, but are not limited to, the decontamination of instruments, trays, instrument containers, and case carts; the assembly of instruments and trays; the process of sterilizing instruments and items for use by ancillary departments; the preparation of case carts for scheduled and emergency cases.

Core Job Functions
- Closed instrument containers are decontaminated and assembled by manufacturer's recommendations. Case carts are wiped down in the decontamination area. Case carts are pulled for cases with minimal errors in the pull room located in clean side of Sterile Processing.
- Delicate instruments are handled according to specifications to prevent damage and powered equipment is cleaned and sterilized according to manufacturer's recommendations. Instrument trays are prepared for wrapping by verifying instruments are clean and in working order and tray lists are utilized when assembling sets to prevent errors. Appropriate packaging material is selected and correct indicators are used on packages with initials/load control label.
- Participates in and serves on at least one unit based or system committee. Acts as a resource and preceptor for newly hired staff.
- Utilizes and maintains equipment, sterilization disinfection and processing standards. Performs routine maintenance of endoscopes while trouble shooting potential problems. Understands the concept of dirty and clean as it applies to cleaning of scopes and contamination.
- Monitors status of adequate supplies for department function. Sterilization records are monitored and maintained. Monitors accuracy of instrument tray lists and makes changes as necessary.
- Correct method of sterilization is selected and carts are loaded correctly and itemized list is prepared. Correct parameters are selected for sterilization cycle per manufacturer recommendations.
- Membership to professional organization. Attends and participates in continuing education.
