- Position Summary
- Registers patients and accessions specimens for processing. Performs procedures related to recording, preparing, staining and permanent mounting of tissue and cytology specimens. Assists physicians with grossing and collection of specimens. Prepares and transports reagents and supplies stored in protected areas. Performs Quality Control, maintenance, troubleshooting, and inventory management. Maintains accurate records. Keeps blocks, slides, and files in order. Participates in educational and training activities.

- Performs patient registration utilizing Meditech or other application to ensure proper billing and report routing. Processes specimens using the appropriate method prescribed for type and test. Assists physicians with collection of specimens when requested.
- Assists pathologists with frozen sections when needed and routinely prepare adequate frozen sections for examination by the pathologist within designated time frame. Maintains complete, accurate, legible logs and/or worksheets. Maintains quality and timeliness of specimen evaluation by investigating problems involving specimen collection and result reporting. Assists physicians with the collection of cytology specimens when requested.
- Embeds specimens to demonstrate margins, full surfaces, lumens and other areas necessary for viewing by the pathologists. Cuts specimens 4-5 microns thick that are free of artifacts, wrinkles and tears. Applies cover glasses of the appropriate size to ensure proper sealing of the tissue. Ascertains that slides are free of fingerprints air bubbles and any other debris that might affect the clarity of the specimen.
- Promptly and correctly files tissue blocks for easy retrieval and assist histotechnicians as needed, file surgical and cytology slides as time permits. Assists in training new co-workers. Adheres to regulations regarding safe handling of hazardous materials such as Exposure Control and Chemical Hygiene Plans.
- Keeps accurate morgue records, logging information clearly and correctly in Morgue Roster. Keeps morgue clean and neatly organized removing soiled laundry and trash, cleaning autopsy equipment after each use and making sure inventory of morgue supplies is complete.
