Job Summary
The Lab Specimen Processor is responsible for receiving, processing, and distributing laboratory specimens for testing. This role includes preparing specimens for analysis, entering data into the Laboratory Information System (LIS), and ensuring accurate labeling and storage of specimens. The Lab Specimen Processor serves as a liaison between the laboratory and other hospital departments, maintaining specimen integrity and adhering to safety protocols.
Essential Functions
- Receive, inspect, and prioritize specimens for testing, ensuring accurate labeling and documentation.
- Enter patient, specimen, and testing information into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
- Prepare specimens for testing via centrifugation and appropriate distribution.
- Maintain specimen integrity through proper storage and handling techniques.
- Resolve order and specimen discrepancies in collaboration with laboratory staff and providers.
- Load specimens onto laboratory instruments and assist with automation system troubleshooting.
- Prepare specimens for repeat or additional testing and process referrals as necessary.
- Dispatch specimens to appropriate laboratory departments or referral labs.
- Maintain accurate records of specimen processing activities and complete required documentation.
- Adhere to infection control protocols and maintain a clean and organized work area.

- Ability to work effectively under pressure and adhere to safety protocols.
Qualifications
Education
- High school graduate or equivalent required
- Medical terminology education preferred
Licenses/Certifications
- None Required
Experience
- 1 year of laboratory experience preferred
- 1 year of medical terminology experience preferred
