Job Summary
- The Special Procedures RN provides specialized nursing care to patients undergoing invasive and interventional procedures, including radiologic and image-guided procedures. Responsibilities include pre-procedure assessment, intra-procedure clinical support, continuous monitoring (including moderate sedation), post-procedure recovery, and performance of PICC and Midline insertions. The RN collaborates with physicians and interdisciplinary staff to ensure safe, effective, and high-quality patient care throughout all procedural phases.
- Conducts comprehensive initial and ongoing assessments of patients undergoing invasive procedures
- Performs PICC and/or Midline insertions as credentialed
- Monitors and/or assists with procedures including but not limited to:
- Needle biopsies; arteriograms; T-tube placements/changes; percutaneous nephrostomy tube placement; phlebotomy; gastrostomy tube placements; bronchoscopy; percutaneous tracheostomy placement; suprapubic catheter placement; liver biopsy; central line placement; thoracentesis; paracentesis; steroidal injections; pleural effusion drain placement; abscess/fistula grams; CT injections and sedations; catheter changes; voiding cystograms; arthrograms.
- Performs venipuncture, administers IV fluids, IV medications, and draws blood gases
- Provides continuous monitoring of patients receiving moderate sedation
- Monitors and evaluates vital signs before, during, and after procedures; performs neurovascular checks including pedal, popliteal, and femoral pulses
- Identifies risks and potential complications related to radiologic procedures; responds appropriately to emergencies, contrast reactions, and cardiac/respiratory arrest situations
- Prepares patients for procedures and ensures informed consent is complete
- Ensures proper patient positioning and procedural site preparation
- Maintains the Interventional Radiology suite, including stocking and verifying supply integrity, checking expiration dates, and ordering equipment as needed
- Disinfects equipment between patients according to infection control standards
- Maintains documentation and action plans related to Surgical Services dashboards
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Ability to read, write, and communicate in fluent English
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
- Excellent attendance and reliability
- Knowledge of radiologic procedures, contrast reactions, and emergency response protocols
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced procedural environment

Education
- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing required
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
- Current valid RN license in the state of employment required
- BLS and ACLS certifications required
- PICC competency required or obtained per facility policy
- Minimum of 12 months Critical Care experience required
- PACU and Interventional Radiology experience preferred
- Demonstrated competency in PICC line placement preferred
