POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for all aspects of planning and implementing therapeutic recreation services for residents while meeting all regulatory standards. Supervises Activities Department. Works with residents in provision of recreation services, treating them with dignity and respect for their rights as residents of St. Joseph Manor; provides privacy and maintains confidentiality of all resident information.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate or Bachelor’s Degree in related field
  • Eligible for certification as an Activities Director or Recreation Therapist by a recognized accrediting body
  • Minimum of two years experience in Activities in a long-term care, rehabilitation or healthcare setting, with experience or training in directing group activities
  • One year supervisory experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in the English language
  • Willingness to work beyond normal working hours and on weekends
  • Ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret the programs’ goals, objectives, policies, and procedures of the Activities Department
  • Ability to interact effectively with residents, their families, visitors, and other staff members
  • Genuine desire to work with older adults
  • Understanding of the needs of the geriatric population

DUTY'S AND RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Oversees and participates in the program development of relevant and purposeful activities to meet the psychological, physical, and social needs of residents.
  • Prepares and implements daily activities programming.
  • Records, maintains, and supervises required documentation (daily participation, quarterly progress notes, Initial/Annual Assessment, Minimum Data Set, Resident Care Plans) for all residents.
  • Oversees and assists in the preparation, set-up, and clean-up of activity functions.
  • Accompanies residents to special events and trips outside the facility.
  • Assists in transport of residents to and from activity functions.
  • Assists residents requiring supervision or minimal assistance with toileting during an activities program.
  • Leads or co-leads groups.
  • Works individually with residents as needed.
  • Attends and participates in facility meetings such as Interdisciplinary, Department Head, Quality Assurance, and Safety Committee.
  • Trains and assigns duties to Activities Staff and volunteers, supervises their work, and regularly evaluates their performance.
  • Creates and executes effective staffing and scheduling patterns within facility guidelines.
  • Makes daily rounds to ensure that all department staff follow established policies and procedures, and to monitor effectiveness of programming.
  • Promotes positive, collaborative relationships with other facility departments (eg. Prepare and educate nursing staff regarding activity programs.)
  • Purchases and maintains supplies for activities programs.
  • Researches and reserves appropriate outside entertainment for various activity programs.
  • Assists the Administrator in selecting and hiring employees for Activities Department staff.
  • Recruits persons from the community to serve as volunteers for the Activities Department.
  • Develops a “Monthly Activities Calendar”—based on residents’ individual and group needs, interests, and capabilities—and posts the schedule on each resident care unit as well as in other appropriate areas of the facility, where it is accessible to residents, staff, and visitors.
  • Participates in budgetary planning for programs and operates within budgetary constraints.
  • Coordinates functions of Executive Council and Resident Council.
  • Performs duties in a way that supports the values and mission of St. Joseph Manor and the Standards of Conduct that are the basis for the Organizational Integrity Program.
  • Attends all mandatory safety, infection control, and educational programs.
  • Conducts and participates in required department inservice/staff meetings.
  • Maintains current licensure through attendance at C.E.U. inservice programs.

Ensures that residents are free from abuse, mistreatment or neglect and reports any such instance or any complaints or grievances made by residents, family members or visitors to the Administrator.
