St. Johnsbury School is looking for its next Head Cook to join the school's community. We have approximately 600 students and approximately 250 employees in the school. We are a 2 minute drive from Exit 21 off I-91 conveniently located on Route 2/Western Avenue.
The head cook is responsible for preparing and serving nutritious meals in large quantities to students, following strict food safety guidelines, by preparing ingredients and cooking dishes according to established menus. The head cook has the freedom to work with recipes within the USDA guidelines. The head cook maintains a clean kitchen, and ensuring proper food storage while adhering to health and safety regulations. The head cook maintains part of the required production record and performs other job-related duties as required.
This is a 40 hour a week non-exempt position that works year round under the supervision of the Food Director. When school is on summer break the hours are 30 a week. St. Johnsbury School is a smoke-free, alcohol-free, cell phone free environment. Serv Safe Certification preferred but not required. All mandatory training is paid by the school.
Job Responsibilities:
- The preparation of 3 meals daily for 100-500 people with 2 options at breakfast and lunch, 1 for supper.
- Cooks with the proper methods of food preparation and proper food service regarding special dietary needs and food allergies.
- Serves meals.
- Maintains inventory, receives deliveries and properly stores items.
- Monitors, arranges, and directs the appropriate storage of dry storage area by rotating stock to prevent outdated inventory.
- Supply tracking on the weekly order list in sufficient quantities for weekly meals.
- Maintain a clean and organized kitchen environment. Clean work station. Disposing of food waste properly and assist in daily clean-up of kitchen equipment, kitchen line service areas.
- Assuming other tasks as given by the food director.
Minimum Requirements:
- Must have a high school diploma or GED.
- Must have experience in quantity cooking for 100 .
- At least 2 years of culinary experience in a high-volume, fast paced environment.
- Must be able to read and follow recipes.
- Must have a driver's license.
- Must pass a fingerprint background check without issues.
- Must pass an Agency of Human Services background check without issues.
Preferred Requirements:
- Professional schooling and/or training preferred; not required
Physical and Mental Requirements of the position:
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to stand and walk for up to 8 hours during a shift.
- Must be able to move quickly and efficiently between different areas of the kitchen.
- Frequent movement in all directions.
- Ability to use knives, peelers, and other sharp tools safely and efficiently.
- Tolerance for exposure to cleaning chemicals, food odors, and heat from ovens.
- Ability to work cooperatively with others, assisting colleagues when needed and maintaining harmony in a high-energy environment.
