Job Summary:
Specialized technical work that includes hydrologic data collection and data processing (water level, precipitation, and flow measurements), and the maintenance of monitoring stations, electronic sensors and loggers, and telemetry equipment.

Job duties include:
  • Measures and records water levels in wells, lakes, rivers, and streams using a variety of manual and automated methods and instruments. Reviews and validates collected hydrological data maintaining paper and electronic field records.
  • Designs and builds telemetry-based monitoring stations on land, wetlands, wells, and water bodies. Operates, tests, and installs data loggers and telemetry equipment, keeping records of stations inventories.
  • Performs maintenance and troubleshooting of the monitoring network; installs programs in data loggers unique to specific stations to ensure water level data across the network is transmitted as scheduled.
  • Use portable computers and digital devices in the field and office to check the telemetry status of monitoring network, and to test and set up environmental sensors and data loggers.
  • Participates in surveys and conducts verification of elevation marks of monitoring stations; records level notes, establishes preliminary elevation, and applies datum corrections to gauge height records.
  • Uses GPS devices to determine monitoring station coordinates. Reads and interprets maps and aerial photographs to locate data collection sites. Works District databases to store and maintain hydrologic data and field documentation.
  • Meets with landowners, and coordinate with state agencies and District staff for the location and installation of monitoring stations.
  • Performs measurements of stream flows using standard USGS techniques at gauging stations using acoustic velocity meters and acoustic Doppler current profilers. Develops discharge ratings and prepare draft annual Station Analysis for each stream gaging station (for levels IV and V).
Ability To:
Perform High School level mathematical calculations; work as part of a team; learn to operate District vehicles, including powerboats, airboats, trucks, ATVs; and communicate in writing and orally.

Skilled In:
Collecting, analyzing, and evaluating hydro-meteorologic conditions and data; use of desktop and laptop computers; installation, calibration, and maintenance of hydro-meteorologic sensors and data collection, storage, and transmission systems; the operation of wheeled and tracked off-road vehicles and watercraft, including air boats.

Minimum Qualifications:
Hydrologic Data Collection Specialist I – all levels require a high school diploma or G.E.D.

Hydrologic Data Collection Specialist II - plus one year of experience in hydrology, open channel hydraulics, industrial mechanics, or electronics; or postsecondary education in hydrology, open channel hydraulics, industrial mechanics, or electronics may substitute for work experience on a year-for-year basis.

Hydrologic Data Collection Specialist III - plus three years of experience in hydrology, open channel hydraulics, industrial mechanics or electronics, one of which must have been in the area of hydrology or open channel hydraulics; or postsecondary education in hydrology, open channel hydraulics, industrial mechanics or electronics may substitute for work experience on a year-for-year basis.

Hydrologic Data Collection Specialist IV - plus four years of experience in hydrology, open channel hydraulics, industrial mechanics or electronics, two of which must have been in the area of hydrology or open channel hydraulics; or formal education in hydrology, open channel hydraulics, industrial mechanics or electronics may substitute for work experience on a year-for-year basis.

Hydrologic Data Collection Specialist V - plus six years of experience in hydrology, open channel hydraulics, industrial mechanics, or electronics, four of which must have been in hydrology or open channel hydraulics; or formal education in hydrology, open channel hydraulics, industrial mechanics or electronics may substitute for work experience on a year-for-year basis.


SJRWMD has determined this to be a mandatory-testing position as described in Section 440.102, Florida Statutes. Physical Requirements/Working Environment:
Applicants must have the ability to endure outdoor environments in uncomfortable temperatures, inclement weather, and remote locations.

Licenses:
Requires a valid Florida driver's license.

Travel:
Requires travel to attend off-site meetings, sometimes outside of normal business hours including overnight. Ability to drive oneself to and from meetings.

Additional Details:
Starting Salary Range:
$35,672.00 - $62,587.20 - Starting salary is based on qualifications and experience.
