Job Summary

The House Supervisor is responsible for the overall supervision of the organization in collaboration with the administrative/executive team. Is the hospital on-site administrative representative when executives are off campus. Acts as clinical resource for patient care staff on the night shift. Responsible for a balance of safe and fiscally responsible staffing. Assists with clinical duties including care coordination of complicated patients and provides consistent patient flow. Promotes positive relationships between departments, patient/family, and providers. Provides age and developmentally appropriate direct care for medical, surgical, psych and orthopedic populations. Adheres to and practices the SJH Corporate Compliance Program and participates in Performance Improvement activities. Performs other duties as requested by Nursing Administration.

Essential Functions

Leadership
1. Demonstrates and role models effective leadership skills for verbal/non-verbal communication, time management, delegation, teamwork, and problem-solving.
2. Performs/contributes to employee evaluations and performance improvement plans.
3. Uses Chain of Command to communicate with Administration and the medical staff to effectively problem solve and resolve issues.
4. Provides leadership to night staff to promote teamwork (floating), and compliance with nursing standards, policies and procedures.

Outcomes
1. Evaluates and documents patient care personnel performance, provides coaching, mentoring and education to night shift staff, and participates in employee corrective action plans.
2. Utilizes risk management knowledge to identify high risk situations & initiates appropriate intervention in collaboration with the Dir. Responsible with Directors for staffing patient care units with an adequate number of competent staff based on acuity and resources available to provide for safe, quality patient care.
4. Identifies educational in-service needs for personnel and acts as a mentor and coach to new staff.

1. Assists with formulation & implementation of policies and procedures for the Hospital.
2. Supervises and provides leadership to the staff by acting as a role model. Promotes interpersonal and
professional growth.
3. Promotes positive staff interactions. Is available to assist staff in clinical and stressful situations.
4. Adheres to practices and ensures compliance with SJH Corporate Compliance Program.
5. Participates in the Problem Resolution Process.

Resources
1. Accountable for appropriate utilization of staffing, supplies and other resources as appropriate for patient care needs and budget.
2. Demonstrates ability to operate mechanical equipment safely and reports malfunction of equipment/supplies appropriately and in a timely manner. Follows up on repairs and/or notifies Dept. Leader.
3. Demonstrates good time management skills and coaches staff on efficient use of time and resources.

Care Delivery
1. Acts as coach/clinical expert in developing nurses' clinical skills and judgment. I.e. assisting with difficult IV starts, assessing changing patient condition, or calling providers.
2. Proactively facilitates hospital throughput including providing resources, managing patient placement, and patient transfers/discharges.
3. Initiates appropriate nursing interventions, utilizing proper techniques, procedures and safety precautions to meet patient needs.
4. Has nursing skills for basic assessment and treatment of medical, surgical, OB, psych, pediatric, and ortho patients of all ages.
5. Demonstrates awareness and knowledge of medication actions, side effects, toxicity, and protocols for use.
6. Makes rounds on all departments and patients at beginning and periodically throughout shift to identify actual and potential high risk
patient or acuity/staffing issues.

Job Requirements

Minimum Education
Required: BSN
Preferred: Master's Degree in Nursing or related field preferred or in progress.
 
Minimum Work Experience
Required: Good communication, interpersonal, phone and customer service skills. Basic computer skills. Demonstrates leadership abilities with excellent oral and written communication skills. Must be able to articulate and speak clearly and be understood by patients, co-workers, and physicians.
Preferred: Minimum of 5 years experience in acute care clinical setting preferred.  

Required Licenses: Current RN license with the authority to practice in the State of Wyoming. BLS, ACLS, PALS/ENPC required at time of hire. Additional certifications preferred.

Required Skills
Demonstrates leadership abilities with excellent oral and written communication skills. Must be able to articulate and speak clearly and be understood by patients, co-workers, and physicians. Ability to interface with all Medical Center personnel, patients, residents, families and providers in a positive, team orientated and professional manner. Good communication, interpersonal, phone and customer service skills. Basic computer skills.

FUNCTIONAL DEMANDS

Working Conditions
Clinical area environments. Frequent stressful situations. Irregular hours. May require occasional night and weekend shift.

Physical Requirements
75% of time standing and walking. Irregular hours, meals, breaks. Must possess sight/hearing senses to meet job requirements. Intermittent computer use. Must possess the ability to lift, push, pull and move patients, equipment and supplies. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Off shift work. Some stressful situations
