Role Description The Director of Accounting/Controller is a full-time, on-site role based in Billings, MT, responsible for overseeing all aspects of the organization’s accounting and financial reporting functions. This role manages the preparation, analysis, and presentation of timely and accurate financial statements, ensuring compliance with relevant accounting standards, regulations, and internal policies. Day-to-day responsibilities include supervising accounting staff, overseeing general ledger activities, managing month-end and year-end close processes, and coordinating audits with external auditors. The Director of Accounting/Controller also partners with leadership to support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning, provides analytical insights to guide decision-making, and helps maintain effective internal controls and risk management practices. This role collaborates with operational and administrative teams to promote sound financial stewardship and support the mission-driven goals of St. John’s United.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of WorkDay HRIS and Accounting Software preferred.
- Strong foundation in Finance and Financial Reporting, with the ability to interpret and communicate financial results to leadership and stakeholders.
- Demonstrated expertise in preparing and reviewing Financial Statements and managing general ledger processes.
- Certified Public Accounting (CPA) credential or equivalent professional certification, or eligibility and commitment to obtain such certification.
- Advanced Analytical Skills to support budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, and strategic financial planning.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; master’s degree or advanced coursework in business or accounting is beneficial.
- Experience in not-for-profit or healthcare-related organizations, including familiarity with related regulatory and reporting requirements.
- Proven leadership and team management capabilities, with a collaborative, inclusive approach to working across departments.
- Proficiency with accounting software and enterprise financial systems, as well as strong skills in spreadsheet and data analysis tools.
- Advanced knowledge of payroll and payroll laws preferred.
