Position Overview And Responsibilities
The St. John’s Preparatory School Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of individuals and campus facilities before, during, and after the school day. This role reports to the Director of Safety and Emergency Management and works closely with the Dean of Students on a daily basis.
This is a part-time, seasonal position running from September through early June, with a schedule of up to 19.5 hours per week over five days. Occasional evening and weekend hours may be available. The position is a one-year appointment, reviewed annually with the possibility of renewal.

Skills And Competencies
- Maintain a high level of visibility in assigned areas
- Monitor visitors entering and exiting campus, ensuring proper use of school-issued visitor identification badges
- Patrol buildings, grounds, and parking lots to observe unusual behavior and help prevent theft and vandalism
- Maintain regular communication with the Director of Safety and Emergency Management and/or the Dean of Students regarding safety concerns or violations involving individuals or facilities
- Issue parking violation notices as needed
- Assist with directing traffic to ensure campus safety when necessary
- Support bank deposit processes as assigned
- Report emergencies and suspicious activity immediately to the Director of Safety and Emergency Management
- Respond to routine inquiries and direct visitors to appropriate locations
- Assist school administration in the development and implementation of safety procedures
- Stay current on best practices and accepted safety procedures for schools
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Safety and Emergency Management, Dean of Students, or Principal
Education and Experience
- Prior experience working in a school setting, educational environment, or with youth is preferred
- Experience in safety, security, customer service, or a related field is a plus
- High school diploma or equivalent required; additional education or training in safety, security, or a related field is beneficial but not required
- Ability to work effectively within a school community and interact positively with students, faculty, staff, and visitors
- Strong judgment, reliability, and the ability to remain calm and professional in a variety of situations
- Willingness to complete required background checks (e.g., CORI/SORI, fingerprinting) and any relevant safety training
- Extensive walking/standing.
- The ability to sustain a period of physical activity, such as running to respond to emergencies.
- Bending, lifting, pushing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, stooping.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to reach at and above shoulder height to access higher areas of equipment, etc.
- Must be capable of adapting to frequent changes in position throughout the workday.
- Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone.
- Use of hands and fingers for manipulation, and using computer keyboard, educational tools, play equipment, and perform first aid and CPR.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and depth perception.
