St. John’s Prep is an inclusive, Catholic, Xaverian Brothers Sponsored School for young men in grades 6 through 12. Founded on the Xaverian values of compassion, humility, simplicity, trust, and zeal, we educate students to be, do and stand for good in the world. We enroll approximately 1,500 students from more than 90 communities in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine.

Position Overview And Responsibilities

St. John’s Prep seeks mathematics teachers for grades 9 through 12 for the 2026-2027 school year. The Mathematics Department offers a program that allows students “to welcome new challenges, question and justify their conjectures and solutions, test the reasonableness of those solutions, develop facility with and understanding of mathematical operations and procedures, and use them appropriately to make sense of the world.” (St. John’s Prep website). Mathematics teachers at St. John’s Preparatory School teach five (5) classes and are required to complete a proctoring “duty” period per rotation during each semester. Prospective candidates should have the competency and passion to engage every student in a rigorous college preparatory curriculum. Candidates should also have a desire to become an active and collegial member of an adult community of learners. We seek candidates who are open to and willing to embrace a student-centered digital learning model that incorporates education technology tools, open education resources, and varied instructional strategies.

Skills And Competencies

  • Strong content knowledge across high school mathematics disciplines (e.g., Algebra, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Statistics, and/or Calculus)
  • Ability to design and deliver engaging, student-centered lessons that promote critical thinking and problem-solving
  • Demonstrate a willingness to contribute to the school community beyond the classroom, with opportunities to support student life through activities, events, or programs aligned with individual interests and school needs.
  • Skill in differentiating instruction to support a range of learners and learning styles
  • Experience using formative and summative assessments to inform instruction and provide meaningful feedback
  • Ability to foster a classroom environment that encourages curiosity, collaboration, and intellectual risk-taking
  • Strong classroom management and organizational skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with students, families, and colleagues
  • Collaborative mindset and willingness to contribute to a professional learning community
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and a growth-oriented mindset
  • Ability to support students’ social-emotional development alongside academic growth

Education And Experience

  • A minimum of 1-3 years of teaching high school mathematics (or applicable practicum experience).
  • A bachelor’s degree (master’s degree preferred) in mathematics and/or a related field.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diversity of learning styles and learners.

Physical Requirements

  • Standing/sitting for long periods of time.
  • Bending, lifting, pushing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, stooping.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to reach at and above shoulder height to access higher areas of equipment, etc.
  • Must be capable of adapting to frequent changes in position throughout the workday.
  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone.
  • Use of hands and fingers for manipulation, and using computer keyboard, educational tools, play equipment, and perform first aid and CPR.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and depth perception.
