Position Overview
Lifeguards are responsible for supervising campers and staff during swimming and water-related activities, enforcing safety rules, and responding to emergencies as needed. This position requires strong swimming skills, lifeguard certification, and a commitment to providing a safe and enjoyable aquatic environment for all participants.
Skills And Competencies
- Supervise campers and staff during swim sessions, recreational swimming, and water-based activities, ensuring their safety and well-being at all times.
- Enforce camp swimming and safety rules, including proper use of life jackets, diving rules, and behavior expectations, to prevent accidents and injuries.
- Monitor swimming areas and perform regular surveillance of swimmers, identifying and responding to potential hazards or unsafe behaviors.
- Provide emergency response and first aid care in the event of accidents, injuries, or water-related emergencies, including performing water rescues and administering CPR/AED as needed.
- Assist in the setup and maintenance of aquatic facilities, including pool preparation, equipment setup, and routine safety inspections, including pool chemical testing.
- Collaborate with camp leadership, lifeguard team, and other staff members to develop and implement emergency response protocols, safety procedures, and risk management strategies.
- Conduct swim tests and evaluations for campers to assess swimming abilities and determine appropriate swim levels and supervision requirements.
- Communicate regularly with camp leadership, staff, and families regarding swim schedules, safety updates, and camper progress.
- Participate in lifeguard training, drills, and professional development opportunities to maintain and improve lifeguarding skills and knowledge.
- Uphold camp policies and values, promoting a positive and inclusive camp culture that prioritizes safety, respect, and personal responsibility.
Education and Experience
- Lifeguard certification from a recognized organization (e.g., Red Cross, YMCA, Ellis & Associates) required.
- Current certification in CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Lifeguarding/First Aid/AED required.
- Previous experience as a lifeguard, preferably in a camp or aquatic center setting, is highly desirable.
- Strong swimming skills and proficiency in water rescue techniques, including spinal injury management and water-based CPR.
- Excellent observation and surveillance skills, with the ability to identify potential hazards and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact professionally and courteously with campers, families, and staff.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Standing/sitting for long periods of time.
- Bending, lifting, pushing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, stooping.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to reach at and above shoulder height to access higher areas of equipment, etc.
- Must be capable of adapting to frequent changes in position throughout the workday.
- Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone.
- Use of hands and fingers for manipulation, and using computer keyboard, educational tools, play equipment, and perform first aid and CPR.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and depth perception.
