What are the responsibilities and job description for the School Director position at St. John's Nursery School?
School Director – Join Our Nurturing, Play-Based Community!
Exciting opportunity to lead and grow a beloved preschool in a close-knit and welcoming community!
St. John’s Nursery School (“SJNS”) is seeking an enthusiastic Director to carry on the school’s long-standing mission: to provide the best possible early childhood experience for the students.
SJNS is a private, non-denominational preschool that has been serving the children of Westwood and surrounding communities for over 50 years. The school has a Pre-school (3-year old) program and a Pre-K (4-year old) program (totaling approximately 40 students), which are administered by a dedicated and caring staff of teachers who report to the Director. The Director handles the day-to-day operations of the school, oversees curriculum development and reports to the SJNS Board of Directors. The Director also has teaching responsibilities in one Pre-school class on Fridays.
SJNS maintains a 35-week school year that primarily tracks the Westwood public-school vacation and holiday calendar. This position is approximately 28 hours (of which 5 hours are teaching) per week for the 35 weeks of the school year.
In order to foster a relationship with parents and children and to be a resource for the school’s teachers, the Director is expected to be on-site from 8:30 AM until 1:30 PM each school day. SJNS has historically offered an extended day option to students, with dates and sessions dependent upon sufficient demand and interest of the families; this extended day option runs from the end of the school day until 2:30PM on predetermined dates. The Director may be required to be on site to lead the program, depending on staffing needs.
The Director is primarily responsible for:
- Leading staff in a cooperative/team effort to carry out the educational program of SJNS.
- Maintaining, creating (as needed), and supporting a program that meets the emotional, physical, intellectual and social needs of individual children and the school as a whole.
- Assuring compliance with codes of all State and local governing agencies.
- Supporting a Pre-school classroom on Fridays.
Requirements:
- Must be EEC Director qualified.
- Experience working in an Early Childhood setting.
- Certified in CPR and First Aid.
- Prior Director or Assistant Director experience preferred but not required.
Other responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Maintaining an appropriate atmosphere of safety, learning, and fun, in line with SJNS philosophy. This includes ensuring the safety and well-being of each individual child.
- Complying with the school’s policies as well as EEC rules and regulations.
- Observing and collaborating with teachers on the progress of individual children by ensuring that the curriculum consistently offers creative and interesting themes, activities, and lessons that meet the developmental needs of the children.
- Providing oversight, support, informal guidance and formal reviews of the teaching staff as well as recommendations for professional development.
- Establishing and maintaining strong communication with parents.
- Managing the school’s budget and ensuring that all expenses are within budgetary guidelines.

- A supportive, family-like school community where your passion for teaching is valued
- A collaborative and creative teaching environment that celebrates each child’s unique learning journey
