Position Summary:

The Senior Accountant plays a key role in supporting the financial operations of the Agency.  This position is responsible for assisting with the day-to-day accounting functions, financial reporting, compliance, and internal controls, specifically in a nonprofit environment.  The Senior Accountant has strong analytical skills, a commitment to the mission of the Agency, and recognizes that the highest quality of service is delivered with Hospitality, Respect, Quality, Spirituality, and Responsibility, the core values of the Agency, and maintains confidentiality of departmental records, persons, and activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintains the general ledger and ensures accurate and timely posting of transactions.
  • Prepares monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Presents Financial Statements to the Board of Trustees quarterly.
  • Assists with budget preparation and monitoring.
  • Supports grant reporting and restricted fund accounting.
  • Ensures compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
  • Assists with annual audit preparation and liaise with external auditors.
  • Maintains documentation for financial policies and procedures.
  • Ensures compliance with State and Federal Funders.
  • Oversees processing of invoices, payments, and reimbursements.
  • Monitors receivables and ensures timely collection of funds.
  • Supervises Accountant and Support Staff.
  • Coordinates payroll processing and ensures accurate reporting.
  • Supports HR with benefit reconciliations and related financial tasks.
  • Assists in the implementation and optimization of accounting systems.
  • Recommends improvements to financial processes and internal controls.
  • Participates in planning and implementing cross-training/cross utilization for various department functions.       
  • Observes Agency and departmental procedures concerning safety, emergencies, behavior management, and professional conduct.
  • Monitors client areas for safety and ease of access.
  • Participates in all Safeguarding Trainings related to the protection of children and vulnerable adults.
  • Participates in departmental meetings, information sharing and in-service training.  Offers ideas for improved services and operations.
  • Develops professional competencies; keeps abreast of related literature, enhances technical skills and knowledge. 
  • Promotes teamwork.
  • Work flexible hours as needed based on program needs. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

Qualifications for the Position:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • CPA preferred, but not required.
  • 2-4 years accounting experience, preferably in a non-profit environment with progressive duties.
  • Proficiency in account software (e.g., Aplos)
  • Strong understanding of fund accounting and grant compliance.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a small team environment.
  • Required skills, knowledge, and ability to perform job.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective work relationships.
  • Ability to learn new tasks quickly.
  • Effective oral communication skills.
