Associate Veterinarian Job Description
The associate veterinarian's responsibilities include examining pets to diagnose and treat various health issues, including preventative health care, consulting with pet owners regarding these issues, and performing surgical procedures.
An exceptional Associate Veterinarian should display a sound knowledge of animal health care, and treat all pets with compassion, and love in a fear free manner.
Associate Veterinarian Responsibilities
- Examine pets to diagnose various illnesses and injuries
- Treat pets by prescribing appropriate medications, cleaning and dressing wounds, and providing emergency care
- Collect and analyze samples of pet’s blood, urine, and feces
- Operate and analyze radiograph and ultrasound to aid in diagnosis
- Perform surgeries and dental procedures
- Vaccinate pets per lifestyle risks
- Advise owners on preventative care, nutrition, and proper aftercare following surgical and medical procedures
- Euthanize pets where medical treatment is, or would be, ineffective
- Update medical records
Associate Veterinarian Requirements
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree
- Indiana State Veterinarian License
- DEA License
- Compassion for both pets and their owners
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to use medical technology during diagnosis, treatment, and surgery of pets
- Sound analytical and problem-solving skills
- Continued education to stay abreast of latest developments in animal medicine
- Experience working as a veterinarian is ideal
- Willingness to provide after-hours emergency treatment, when necessary
