Job Title: Mammography Technologist

Department: Radiology

Reports To: Manager of Imaging Services

FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt

Job Summary: Under direct supervision, the Mammography Technologist performs specialized examinations of the breast to help diagnose and treat breast disease in patients. A Mammography Technologist may perform screening exams or diagnostic exams.

Job Results & Essential Function

Duties and Responsibilities

  • The Mammography Technologist is expected to practice safe procedures and adhere to radiation safety measures under the supervision of the Radiology Manager or the Radiologist. Specific duties may include but are not limited to:
  • Complete patient education regarding the exam
  • Promote privacy for the patient
  • Promote comfort for the patient
  • Perform diagnostic or screening mammogram as ordered
  • Produce high-quality films for the radiologist to evaluate
  • Complete appropriate documentation
  • Perform quality control functions related to mammography
  • Assist in compilation and maintenance of statistical data
  • Follow infection control and safety guidelines
  • Communicate with internal scheduling, ultrasound department, primary care physicians, and the radiologist.
  • Delegate reports, obtain medical releases, upload images
  • Maintain and track biopsy reports
  • Maintain records for MQSA
  • Send correspondence letters to patients
  • Call patients back for additional views

Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrate an understanding of human anatomy, physiology, pathology, and medical terminology
  • Maintain a high degree of accuracy in mammography positioning and exposure technique
  • Serves as the primary liaison between patients and Radiologists and other members of the support team
  • Use professional and ethical judgment and critical thinking when performing their duties
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Participates in continuing education and learning experiences to enhance and maintain current knowledge and skills for continued competence
  • Ability to work as a team member
  • Skilled in the operation of Mammography equipment
  • Attention to detail
  • Basic understanding of computer technology
  • Perform all duties using proper body mechanics
  • Manual dexterity and fine motor coordination
  • Ability to work in a stressful environment
  • Ability to follow directions/instructions from his/her supervisor
  • Consistent attendance is required to assure that the client facilities’ needs and patient needs are met

  • Participates in department and/or system-wide team dynamic initiatives.
  • Provides day-to-day support of workflow within the work unit; including disseminating information, assigning staff to cover for absences, providing technical assistance, answering questions, and resolving problems as directed by the Supervisor of Clinical Support.
  • Act as a team player and works collaboratively within the team and organization.
  • Assist with developing priorities, goals, and action plans.
  • Respond to requests from Clinical Supervisor.
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to assist with the evaluation of programs and services.

  • Identifies better, faster, more efficient ways of doing tasks as well as eliminates unnecessary work and all non-value-added activities to enable a focus on work that generates greater value.

Requirements

Education & Experience

  • Completion of a two year approved School of Radiologic Technology
  • MQSA/FDA- 15 CEU’s every 3 years, 200-documented case numbers every 2 years

Licenses and/or Certifications

  • Valid state radiology registration as required by state law
  • Registry by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology Current CPR

Physical Demands

  • Frequently move/lift around 40 pounds, depending on assignment requirements
  • Stand for long periods with frequent squatting, twisting, bending, kneeling, and reaching to prepare equipment, materials

Language Ability

  • Ability to talk to others and convey information effectively
  • Writing - Communicating effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience.
  • Reading Comprehension - Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work-related documents.
  • Active Listening- Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.

  • Basic math skills

  • Social Perceptiveness: Being aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do.
  • Critical thinking: Using logic and reasoning to identify the strength and weaknesses of alternative solutions.

Working Conditions

  • The Mammography Technologist must understand and accept the possibility of exposure to inside environmental conditions, such as radiation, noise, infectious/communicable diseases, blood and blood-borne diseases, chemicals and/or chemical fumes, odors, gases, and dust. In addition to, frequent exposures to distressed patients, families, or visitors.

Salary : $35 - $44
