Food Service Specialist – GSRP Preschool
St. George Preschool is seeking a dependable, organized, and self-motivated Food Service Specialist to join our Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP), Michigan's state-funded preschool program.
This position is primarily an independent role responsible for planning, preparing, and serving nutritious meals for preschool children while maintaining a clean, safe, and organized kitchen. The Food Service Specialist works independently for most of the day and collaborates with classroom staff and administration to support children's nutritional needs and ensure compliance with all food program and licensing requirements.
Responsibilities
- Independently prepare and serve breakfast, lunch, and snacks following CACFP guidelines, Michigan Department of Health, and licensing requirements.
- Prepare allergy-friendly meals and snacks according to individual student dietary needs while following safe food handling and cross-contamination prevention procedures.
- Maintain a clean, sanitary, and organized kitchen in accordance with SafeServ, CACFP, and state health regulations.
- Independently complete weekly grocery shopping, transport groceries to the preschool, unload and properly store all food and kitchen supplies, and maintain appropriate inventory levels to support daily meal preparation.
- Monitor food temperatures, expiration dates, inventory, and proper food storage.
- Wash, sanitize, and store dishes, utensils, kitchen equipment, and classroom water bottles.
- Collaborate with the Center Director regarding menu planning and food program requirements.
- Maintain accurate food program documentation and submit all receipts to the Center Director.
- Deliver meals to classrooms on time, according to each classroom daily schedule and at appropriate serving temperatures.
- Maintain kitchen substitute plans and ensure kitchen readiness at all times.
- Participate in required staff meetings, family partnership events, professional development, and trainings.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding children, families, and staff.
- Assist with classroom restroom breaks, staff lunch breaks, and provide substitute classroom coverage when requested by administration.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the daily operations of the preschool.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Food service experience preferred.
- SafeServ certification or willingness to obtain preferred.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage time effectively.
- Must meet Michigan Child Care Licensing (LARA) requirements.
- Must successfully pass a comprehensive background check.
- Must obtain and maintain required trainings, including:
- CPR/First Aid
- Bloodborne Pathogens
- Health and Safety Training
- Mandated Reporter Training
- Must complete required annual professional development.
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Commitment to providing a safe, healthy, and inclusive environment for all children.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to bend, squat, reach, and safely move throughout the kitchen and preschool.
- Ability to respond quickly during emergency situations.
