Job Summary
The Manager – Surgery / OR is responsible for coordinating and supervising the daily operations of the surgical department. This includes staff scheduling, patient care oversight, resource planning, regulatory compliance, and continuous quality improvement. The Manager promotes clinical excellence and team engagement to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality perioperative care.
Essential Functions
- Oversees day-to-day operations of the surgical department, ensuring safe and efficient workflows.
- Prepares and adjusts staffing schedules to support optimal patient care and surgical case volume.
- Collaborates with surgeons, anesthesia, and sterile processing to ensure surgical readiness and quality outcomes.
- Develops, implements, and evaluates policies, procedures, and quality initiatives.
- Participates in recruitment, onboarding, training, and performance evaluation of perioperative staff.
- Assesses developmental needs and coordinates continuing education and competency programs.
- Monitors and recommends the purchase of surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment.
- Maintains professional knowledge and ensures technical proficiency in all surgical functions.
- Leads or contributes to quality assurance, patient safety, and regulatory compliance activities.
- Supports infection control practices and PPE protocols related to exposure risks (e.g. bloodborne pathogens, chemicals, radiation).
- Demonstrates ability to care for patients across the lifespan in the surgical setting.
- Participates in process improvement initiatives and acts as a clinical resource for complex patient cases.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations
- Proficiency in surgical care standards, OR workflows, and sterile techniques.
- Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
- Knowledge of surgical supply/equipment needs and vendor coordination.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and lead a multidisciplinary team.
- Competence in Microsoft Office and electronic health records (EHR).
Qualifications
Education
- Postsecondary (Cert/Diploma/Program Grad) from an accredited school of nursing (Required) And
- Bachelor’s Degree in nursing (Preferred)
Experience
- 3 years operating room nursing experience (Preferred) And
- Prior Experience in leadership or charge nurse level roles, in perioperative services (Preferred)
