The Public Safety Operations Supervisor provides leadership and operational oversight to ensure a safe, secure, and welcoming healthcare environment for patients, visitors, staff, and the surrounding community at BMC Brighton. Serving as the Public Safety supervisor on assigned shifts, this role is responsible for guiding, supporting, and holding Public Safety personnel accountable while ensuring effective staffing, high-quality service delivery, and compliance with healthcare security standards. The Supervisor plays a key role in workforce performance management, security incident response, regulatory compliance, and collaboration with clinical leadership and external public safety partners.

The Public Safety Operations Supervisor oversees daily Public Safety operations by directing and supporting Public Safety Officers and other assigned personnel throughout the shift. This role ensures appropriate staffing coverage, clear work assignments, and effective deployment of personnel to meet operational, safety, and patient-care needs. The Supervisor routinely evaluates campus activity, staffing levels, and operational conditions and makes timely adjustments to assignments, schedules, or coverage to maintain a safe and efficient environment. This includes approving overtime, modifying schedules, reassigning personnel, or temporarily removing employees from duty when necessary to address safety, performance, or operational concerns.

The Supervisor is responsible for assisting the team during security matters and incidents, supporting employee performance and accountability through observation, coaching, and formal evaluation. This includes conducting performance reviews, documenting expectations, developing corrective action or improvement plans, and initiating corrective action or recommending disciplinary measures when appropriate. The Supervisor also supports the onboarding, training, and professional development of Public Safety personnel to ensure consistent performance and adherence to departmental standards.

In addition, the Supervisor provides leadership during safety, security, and behavioral health incidents, taking action in dynamic or high-risk situations, particularly in critical clinical areas such as the Emergency Department. The role includes overseeing incident investigations, ensuring accurate documentation, maintaining required records and reports, and coordinating with Nursing Supervisors, hospital departments, Facilities, and external law enforcement or first responders. Acting as a key liaison, the Supervisor communicates operational updates, staffing concerns, and emerging risks to the Director of Public Safety and ensures departmental practices align with hospital policies, accreditation requirements, and healthcare security best practices.

Essential Job Functions

  • Provides leadership and oversight to Public Safety Officers and assigned staff by assigning duties, directing daily activities, and ensuring accountability for performance, conduct, and service delivery.
  • Responds and assists as necessary to safety and security emergencies.
  • Evaluates employee performance through observation and formal review processes; develops coaching strategies, corrective action plans, and performance improvement measures as needed.
  • Adjusts staffing resources to meet operational demands, including approving overtime, modifying schedules, reassigning personnel, and removing employees from duty when appropriate to maintain safe operations.
  • Directs and oversees responses to safety, security, and behavioral health incidents, including investigations, documentation, and coordination with internal departments and external agencies.
  • Serves as the senior on-shift Public Safety representative and primary liaison with Nursing Supervisors, hospital leadership, Facilities, and law enforcement or emergency responders.
  • Ensures compliance with departmental policies, safety programs, and healthcare regulatory and accreditation standards, and communicates operational and workforce matters to the Director of Public Safety.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's or bachelor's degree in criminal justice, management, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience in healthcare security, public safety, law enforcement, or a related field, including prior supervisory or lead responsibility preferred.
  • Must have the ability to possess and maintain a valid Massachusetts License to Carry (LTC) as a condition of employment.
  • Must possess and maintain the ability to operate a motor vehicle in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, including a valid driver's license, as required for operational duties.
  • Knowledge of hospital safety operations, emergency response, workplace violence prevention, and incident investigation.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required hospital-mandated training, certifications, and credentials.
  • Availability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and respond to emergent operational needs.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong leadership presence with the ability to guide teams, make sound decisions, and maintain accountability in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
  • Working knowledge of healthcare security regulations, accreditation requirements, and industry best practices, including Environment of Care, Emergency Management, workplace violence prevention, and patient privacy considerations.
  • Ability to apply regulatory standards and best practices to daily operations, staffing decisions, incident response, and performance management.
  • Clear and professional verbal and written communication skills, including incident reporting, performance documentation, and operational briefings.
  • Ability to coach, mentor, and support staff while maintaining consistent expectations and professional standards.
  • Proficiency with computer applications and security-related systems used in healthcare public safety operations, including reporting, access control, and monitoring technologies.

Compensation Range:

$23.32- $32.69

This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications. However, our approach to determining base pay is comprehensive, and a broad range of factors is considered when making an offer. This includes education, experience, skills, and certifications/licensures as they directly relate to position requirements; as well as business/organizational needs, internal equity, and market-competitiveness.
