Job Summary:
Assists the pathologist in preparing surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for diagnostic microscopic examination.Demonstrate respect, dignity, kindness and empathy in each encounter with all patients, families, visitors and other employees regardless of cultural background.
Job Description:
- Accurately and thoroughly describe gross anatomical features of surgical tissue; dissect and sample specimens to best demonstrate disease processes and/or unexpected findings; photograph pertinent gross findings.
- Review patient clinical information for proper specimen handling, including radiography, H&P, previous pathology reports, etc
- Ensure proper accessioning and assignment of CPT codes.
- Triage fresh tissue samples and adequate material for advanced studies such as flow cytometry, chromosome analysis, etc.
- Assure proper maintenance of equipment, provision of adequate supplies, and cleanliness of the surgical pathology suite.
- Assist pathologist during intraoperative consultations.
- Prepare and assist pathologist during postmortem examinations.
- Enhance professional growth development of self, department staff, other hospital personnel, community and students by participation in continuing education, and in-service training.
- Implements iCARE principles using communication skills and human relations to promote quality patient care and productive working environment
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education, Credentials, Licenses:
- Completion of a NAACLS accredited PA program
- ASCP certification (must be obtained within 1 year of employment for new graduates)
Specialized Knowledge:
- Dissection of complex oncological specimens with knowledge of AJCP staging criteria
