Media Specialist/Student Interventionist

 

Position Summary:

 

Create a school “learning commons” by developing and administering an integrated school library media program. Instruct students and staff in the effective use of the media center, information and technology literacy skills, and the use of equipment.  Evaluate, select, and procure print and digital resources and related equipment to support teachers in all content areas.  Implement a results-oriented information and technology literacy skills curriculum integrated in partnerships with teachers.  Provide leadership and guidance for effectively integrating technologies with instruction.  Instruct teachers, administrators, and other staff to use new information technologies, including artificial intelligence.

 

Work extensively with students to help them improve specific skills in reading and math.  Address the specific needs of a particular child due to reading or math deficiencies. Implement intervention programs with small groups of students and maintain data related to the intervention program.  Communicate with teachers and administrators regarding student progress.

Essential Functions:

 

To provide the leadership and expertise required to ensure that the St. Clare Walker Middle School library media program and the student interventionist role are aligned with the mission, goals, and objectives of the school and are an integral component of the school’s instructional program. 

  • Provides specialized instruction to 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade students who have been identified to receive additional support in the area of reading or math.
  • Works with multiple grade levels and groups of students to identify the students' needs.
  • Collects and facilitates the review and use of school literacy data to guide instruction and plan for student needs.
  • Assists with screening, evaluation, and recommending interventions for students in the lower quartile for math and reading.
  • Completes reports, collects data, and provides information for program monitoring as requested.
  • Conferences as requested with parents/guardians regarding the reading performance of individual students.
  • Selects, requisitions, and maintains books, instructional materials, and instructional aids.
  • Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  

  • Experience with information and technology literacy skills, including the research process. 
  • Experience in evaluating and selecting print and digital resources.  
  • Expertise in basic technology, including computer operation, productivity software, and basic network knowledge.  
  • Communication skills, including the ability to proactively collaborate with students and staff.
  • Knowledge of instructional methods, strategies, and pedagogy. 
  • Knowledge of curriculum development processes and learning theories.  
  • Understanding of student growth and development.  
  • Leadership and organizational skills. 
  • Ability to successfully interact with students and staff from various disciplines and with differing skill levels. 
  • Familiarity with national and VA state standards for information and technology literacy, including the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), American Association of School Librarians (AASL) standards, and VA Standards of Learning.

Education and Experience: 

  1. Master's Degree and be eligible for a Virginia Teaching License.
  2. Must possess effective instructional delivery techniques and excellent communication skills.
  3. Must possess knowledge of the needs of students requiring remedial reading instruction and must possess knowledge of instructional best practices.
  4. Strong knowledge base in the science of reading, structured literacy, and reading research.

Licensure Requirements: Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), certificate(s) and/or endorsement(s) (such as Highly Qualified status) for

position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia or School Board.

 

Physical Requirements: 

 

This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires walking and occasionally requires sitting and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, distance vision, depth perception and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, playground, classroom, light traffic).
