The SCHS NICU is a Level IIIA with evolving subspecialty capabilities to include pediatric surgery and anesthesia. Candidate will provide expertise to the perinatal center, referral hospitals and physicians. Neonatologists working at St. Charles require significant clinical experience in managing the range and complexity of patients referred to the NICU. POSITION OVERVIEW: The Neonatologist is the team leader for newborn care delivery in the Perinatal Center and the NICU located at St. Charles Bend. The physician will oversee the NICU multidisciplinary care team and will have clinical oversight for the Advanced Practice Team. The Neonatologist will provide clinical leadership and support to the Resuscitation team in the Family Birth Center. Primary clinical duties include clinical consultations, admissions, daily rounds, procedures, and discharge planning. Skill set includes all aspects and procedures as they relate to NICU care. The Neonatologist serves as medical control for babies being transported throughout the region. Embedded in the role is leadership and participation in key administrative meetings, Quality Improvement, Morbidity & Mortality review and Outreach support. In addition, the Neonatologist will provide support to a planned Telemedicine program at referral delivery centers. Work schedule: A full-time Neonatologist covers 92-day shifts. Day shifts are 12-hour shifts, with flexible scheduling available. Night call is 12 hours, with the expectation of 30-minute or less response time. Outpatient antenatal consults are included in the clinical expectations: these may be performed when not on service, per physician preference. Call expectation: After-hours call is a condition of employment and is shared among the Neonatologists, averaging 1:4 call. In-person response time is 30 minutes or less to provide evaluation, management and care for unstable neonatal patients, attendance at high-risk deliveries, medical management of incoming & outgoing interhospital transfers, emergency response to the perinatal center, and on-site NICU admissions per guidelines. The Neonatologist also provides telephone support to NICU APP and RN teams and to referring physicians. Outreach: Participation in Department Outreach plan to support regional delivery centers with scheduled Outreach visits as determined by Medical Director. Participation in departmental meetings including monthly team meetings; annual Retreats; NICU & Perinatal M&M; High Risk OB forums; (estimated at 68 hours/year). Quality Improvement: Leadership and participation estimated at 10 hours/month/physician. Work location: The Physician will be in Bend Hospital for coverage needs. Other outreach locations may be added as patient and business needs dictate. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES: (May perform additional duties of similar complexity within SCHS as required or assigned) Clinical Expectations: Practice and model excellence in the neonatology care domains of diagnosis, aligning treatment goals to patient values, making definitive diagnoses, guiding treatment, ensuring follow-up care, promoting growth, and preventing illness. Practice medicine within the scope of license, training and credentialing. Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individual patient care while demonstrating expert knowledge of evidence-based neonatal intensive and neonatal critical care Collaborate with other members of the NICU providers and multidisciplinary team to ensure a world-class patient experience. Collaborates with pharmacy to provide appropriate medications accurately in accordance with SCHS policies and procedures for medication administration. Analyzes data collected to determine health status and identify differential diagnoses based on history, physical exam, and review of radiographic and laboratory data. Manages therapeutic regimen as outlined by established protocols for patients with acute illnesses. Reassesses and modifies plan as necessary to achieve medical and health goals. Documents reassessment and response to treatment to determine effectiveness of plan of care. Performs indicated routine or emergent procedures. Performs invasive diagnostic and supportive procedures including airway management and intubation, non-invasive ventilation, mechanical ventilation, central venous and arterial access, therapeutic hypothermia, and hemodynamic support. Oversee continuous monitoring of vital signs, oxygenation, growth and nutrition, multisystem organ function and neurodevelopment Provides counseling, education, anticipatory guidance, and support for patients and family members. Serves as a liaison with discharge planners or with other agencies providing post-hospital care; accurately completes patient discharge instructions and/or discharge summaries. Provides emergency care, as required, according to basic life support and advanced cardiac life support protocols. Administrative Expectations: Document all patient care within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and complete all necessary tasks in compliance with health system policies and regulatory agencies to ensure timely and accurate billing. Be familiar with the SCHS organization structure. Participate in SCHS meetings and assist in policy formation for SCHS and Physician’s practice. Keep medical knowledge and skills current through regular CME activity. Must attest to having adequate (CME) to meet maintenance of board certification and compliance with MSO rules and continuing privileges without restriction. Keep all licenses and appropriate certifications current and unrestricted. Maintain active privileges at a St. Charles Health System hospital sufficient to permit performance of job duties. This includes introducing oneself and stating your purpose, asking the patient their preferred name, spending time with the patient to determine their care goals, active listening, and using skillful communications (appropriate touch, eye contact, etc.). Complies with all applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures, supporting the health system’s corporate integrity efforts by acting in an ethical and appropriate manner, reporting known or suspected violations of applicable rules, and cooperating fully with all health system’s investigations and proceedings. EDUCATION Required: Graduation from an accredited medical school. Successful completion of an accredited pediatric residency and neonatal-perinatal medicine fellowship program. LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION Required: Oregon license as MD/DO Board certified or eligible in Neonatology. To be board certified or qualified to sit for the boards in primary area of practice at the Hospital. Those applicants who are not board certified at the time of application but who have completed their residency or fellowship training are required to become board certified within seven years of residency or fellowship training. Valid driver’s license and the ability to meet SCHS driving requirements. Maintain unrestricted DEA number. Maintain unrestricted ability to participate in Medicare / Medicaid, or other federal or state governmental health care programs. Current Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification required. Additional certifications may be required based on privileges granted to provider my Medical Staff Services at SCHS inpatient locations. Preferred: Point of Care Ultrasound Certification EXPERIENCE Required: A minimum of 5 years’ active practice in neonatology Advanced written and verbal communication skills to effectively interact with a diverse population and professionally represent St. Charles Health System Experience working in a team environment and proven ability to collaborate, manage facilitation and consensus building among health care professionals and agencies to achieve expected results Preferred: Epic EMR software experience Quality Improvement experience PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform the job safely. GENERAL Must have excellent communication skills and ability to interact with a diverse population and professionally represent SCHS. Strong team working and collaborative skills. Ability to multi-task and work independently. Attention to detail. Excellent organizational skills, written and oral communication and customer service skills, particularly in dealing with stressful personal interactions. Intermediate to advanced proficiency with Electronic Medical Record systems. Intermediate in Microsoft applications (Word, Excel).
