Description

  • Assist with establishing vision and goals for mental health, substance use, and suicide prevention programming that supports a holistic (mind, body, spirit) and public health approach for the Bonas HEALS (Helping, Educating ,Advocating, Leading & Supporting) project under the St. Bonaventure University SAMSHA Grant.
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate theory and evidenced-based programs related to health promotion, mental health awareness, substance (mis)use, and suicide prevention.
  • Assist with the development and incorporation of strategies, policies, programs and services that address known mental health concerns in higher education.
  • Maintain and support (i.e., recruit students and supervise) a peer educator (Bonas HEALS) program.

This role is funded through an external grant with support expected through August 30, 2026. Extension of the position is possible but will depend on additional grant funding.

Examples of Duties


Manages Bonas HEALS project and campus health promotion and prevention efforts to support clinical service delivery. Strategizes and implements efforts to achieve integrated outreach education.

Identifies and maintains knowledge of evidence- and theory-based interventions; responds to emerging national wellness trends to promote student success. Identifies industry "best practices" and develops programs that meet or exceed industry standards. Establishes and monitors priorities and progress toward program goals, as well as reviews, evaluates and adjusts project outcomes in collaboration with the Director of the Counseling Center.

Engages the campus community through awareness campaigns and interactive outreach programs to provide education and training on various topics related to mental health, substance (mis)use, and suicide prevention strategies. Assists with increasing student engagement with campus health services through programming, outreach, data collection, and resource connection. Supports and establishes impactful, innovative programs that serve historically marginalized students and vulnerable student populations affected by substance use, health inequities, and access to basic needs .Reviews and oversees written materials, programs, workshops, and social media content related to wellbeing programming.

Develops and manages a network of partnerships on- and off-campus through involvement of appropriate stakeholders in ongoing assessment and interventions to improve the campus environment, support healthier behaviors, and build a foundation from a unified, holistic approach to well being incorporating physical, social, community, mental and emotional well being.

Establishes strategic partnerships to align and accomplish mutual program goals. Collects and analyzes data related to programming for students, faculty, and staff to assess program and outreach efficacy. Serves on university committees ,such as the AOD committee.

Typical Qualifications


B.A./B.S. in public health, health education, higher education, or related field is required; a master's degree in a related field such as higher education, public health, or human services is preferred.

Minimum of two years full-time experience in the field of health education programming (including the development and implementation of mental health, substance abuse, and suicide prevention programming) and understanding of mental health and related issues on a college campus.

Demonstrated past experience working with student populations; experience in a college or university setting highly preferred.

Must have excellent administrative, communication, and organizational skills.

Must be proficient using computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. Proficiency using electronic medical record or other electronic record keeping systems preferred

Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) and Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) preferred.

  • Exercise and apply sound judgment and decision-making skills. Maintain integrity and privacy of information (as applicable).
  • Ability to balance priorities to accomplish assigned tasks within the required time frame and shift quickly between several tasks without loss of continuity.
  • Effectively communicate general information to University constituency, as well as relay complex or adverse information with tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to accept supervision, assignments, change and correction.
  • Effectiveness in dealing with a wide range of professionals, staff, and administrators.
