What are the responsibilities and job description for the Organist position at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church?
PURPOSE: One of the key ministries of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church is to provide excellent, diverse and joyful music for our congregation and the community. In support of this mission, the Organist shall provide a ministry of music which includes a prelude, postlude, hymns and other service music and accompaniment for various musical groups. The Organist reports to the Pastor and Session.
DUTIES:
- Playing the organ for Sunday morning worship services
- Working with the Pastor to select appropriate hymns
- With the Pastor and other music directors, coordinate a cohesive music plan and musical selections
- Being prepared to play piano with other ensembles on Sundays
- Accompanying other music as needed
- Playing for special worship services: Epiphany, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil, Easter and Christmas Eve services
- The Organist shall be the first staff musician asked to provide music for any special services, such as funerals or weddings
- The Organist is responsible to arrange for a substitute for planned absences. In the case of illness, the church will arrange for a substitute
- Ensuring the organ and organ music library are maintained
- Ordering supplies with the approval of the Pastor
- Being familiar with copyright laws
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
- Understanding of the role and purpose of music in worship
- Demonstrated ability to play the organ and piano including the ability to sight read music, accompany, play from a single note melody line with chords and have a personal repertoire to be shared
- Ability to play a wide variety of music
- Openness to various styles of music
- Ability to transpose on piano is highly desirable
- Completion of the church’s Child Abuse Prevention Program (CAPP) and Sexual Harassment Prevention Training
WAGES AND BENEFITS:
- Part-time salary set annually by Session
- Benefits per personnel policies
- The Organist has the privilege of teaching music lessons at the church using church instruments
- As of 1/1/25, $22.25/hour for up to 10 hours/week approved x 52 weeks minus 60 hours (for 5 hour weeks). Organist one Sunday off a month with minimal hours 5 worked during those weeks. Paid according to hours turned in on timesheet. 4 paid vacation weeks (vacation week means practice and Sunday).
