Early Learning Center (ELC) Job Description
Sub Teacher
We are looking to hire a substitute teacher to assist in our early learning center. Responsibilities include supervising children, keeping classrooms clean and safe, and following daily activity schedules.
Core Responsibilities
- Supervise children to ensure safety during indoor and outdoor play.
- Implement lesson plans and lead hands-on, age-appropriate group activities.
- Meet basic needs including snack/meal preparation, diaper changes, and nap monitoring.
- Communicate updates to lead teachers or parents about daily milestones.
- Maintain cleanliness by sanitizing toys, surfaces, and keeping classrooms tidy.
State Qualifications & Requirements (DCYF / MERIT)
Under Washington Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) rules, substitutes must meet specific standards:
- Age & Education: Must be at least 18 years old with a high school diploma or GED.
- Background Check: Must clear a portable background check via the Washington State Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF).
- MERIT Registry: Must have a profile and STARS ID on Washington’s MERIT Professional Development Registry.
- Required Certifications: Current CPR, First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogens training.
- Mandatory Training: Completion of Child Care Basics, Safe Sleep
- Health Requirements: Negative Tuberculosis (TB) test and a valid Washington State Food Worker Card.
Position Purpose
Sub Teachers serve in a rotation capacity throughout the pre-school, infant/toddler building and classrooms to relieve classroom teachers and provide extra staffing support as needed.
Support Teachers are expected to be a positive role model to Co-Teachers/Aides, and are actively engaged with them and students during their work time. Support Teachers should also be excellent team workers, who eagerly collaborate in creating a positive community environment at St. Aloysius Catholic School/Early Learning Center.
Essential Duties
Support the classroom teachers in daily work
Complete special projects assigned by Lead Teacher
Adhere to the dress and hygiene code
Participate in all trainings as required by Administrator
Model appropriate and preferred methods for interactions with children and model behavior that represents the core moral and ethical values of the St. Aloysius ELC
Foster and encourage neatness and manners in themselves, their Co- teachers/Aides and children in their care
Meet ELC Professional Conduct Standards
Must be 18 years of age
Physical Abilities - To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to:
Frequently lift up to 30 pounds, must be able to lift and carry a maximum of 40 pounds
Walk and stand unaided
Walk back and forth several times per shift from the ELC infant and toddler rooms to the kitchen in the school building to store and retrieve refrigerated supplies, complete laundry, etc.
Pull/push, carry, grasp, reach
Sit, rock and securely hold infants and toddlers on the floor and in a rocking chair
Stand up from a sitting position while holding an infant or toddler
Occasionally crawl, stoop, kneel
Pay: $19.77 per hour
