Build Hawaiʻi’s future with SSFM.

SSFM is seeking a skilled, proactive Construction Manager to support transportation and infrastructure projects on Hawaiʻi Island. This is a key role for a detail‑oriented, collaborative leader who excels in solving problems, fostering strong contractor and client relationships, and ensuring projects are delivered safely, on time, and within scope.

As part of SSFM’s Construction Management team, you will serve as the primary field representative between SSFM, HDOT, and contractors—administering contracts, guiding project delivery, and upholding the highest standards of quality and professionalism.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage day‑to‑day construction management activities and ensure work complies with contract documents and HDOT requirements.
  • Serve as SSFM’s primary on‑site representative, building strong working relationships with HDOT, contractors, consultants, and project stakeholders.
  • Monitor schedule, cost, progress, and quality; identify and mitigate delays, conflicts, or potential claims.
  • Lead construction progress meetings and coordinate communications across all parties.
  • Review and process contractor submittals, RFIs, schedules, payment applications, and change requests.
  • Administer and negotiate change orders and contract modifications.
  • Direct and support construction inspectors and project staff; ensure compliance with plans, specifications, traffic control requirements, and safety standards.
  • Maintain accurate logs, documentation, and correspondence; prepare reports and progress estimates.
  • Conduct field observations, inspections, punch‑list development, and project closeout activities.
  • Communicate project status, risks, and issues to SSFM and HDOT leadership.
  • Represent SSFM with professionalism and integrity in all client and contractor engagements.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
  • Minimum 7 years of progressive experience in construction management, administration, or transportation construction.
  • Proven experience managing construction projects and administering construction contracts.
  • Strong understanding of scheduling, cost control, contract administration, change management, and documentation practices.
  • Ability to effectively interpret and apply plans, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with contractors, owners, and multi‑disciplinary stakeholders.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize effectively, and exercise sound judgment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 7 years of construction management experience.
  • Experience managing HDOT or other public‑sector transportation infrastructure projects.
  • Background in roadway, bridge, drainage, utility, or general transportation construction.
  • Familiarity with HDOT specifications, procedures, and contract administration practices.
  • Experience reviewing and managing schedules, submittals, RFIs, payment applications, change orders, and claims.
  • Professional certifications such as PE, EIT, or CCM.
  • Experience with construction management software and electronic project documentation systems.
