What are the responsibilities and job description for the Vessel Planner position at SSA Marine?
Summary/Objective:
The Vessel Planners are responsible for directing the flow of our customers’ cargo to the vessel from the container yard in a way that achieves maximum productivity, safety, and efficiency. Utilizing good judgement and general procedures, Vessel Planners create vessel load plans for our marine terminals and other support work as needed. No experience is necessary, and on-the-job training is provided.
The Vessel Planners are responsible for directing the flow of our customers’ cargo to the vessel from the container yard in a way that achieves maximum productivity, safety, and efficiency. Utilizing good judgement and general procedures, Vessel Planners create vessel load plans for our marine terminals and other support work as needed. No experience is necessary, and on-the-job training is provided.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Create vessel stowage plans for the safe and efficient flow of our customers’ containers to vessels to ensure zero downtime for container terminal operations
- Ensure receipt of necessary documents and information from our customers to execute stowage plan, ensure maximum container moves are achieved, and to ensure waterfront labor force is fully utilized
- Ensure that all safety procedures are followed through proper notations on paperwork, equipment segregation, hazardous cargo segregation, VGM information, IMO rules, IMDG, CFR49 and CFR29 requirements
- Assist container terminal management by ensuring the correct containers are discharged and loaded and that exceptions are researched and reported to our customers
- Resolve complaints, research discrepancies in load plans, inform the customers of service failures, serve as a resource for container terminal management in matters related to vessel stowage, and respond to customer inquiries
- Respond to and resolve billing inquiries from customers and internal departments
- Coordinate and implement process improvements for container terminal management and labor
- Create discharge paperwork for use by terminal management and ensure all inbound freight is accounted for
- Set up and balance profile based on the vessel plan received by our customers’ Vessel Agents, identify, and communicate errors in the profile to the customer for resolution
- Communicate the customers’ empty container loading requirement to container terminal management, follow-up with the terminal to ensure container inventory is received for timely loading
- Create stowage requirement instructions for subsequent planners to ensure communication of critical details
- Re-balance projections as necessary and communicate to container terminal management
- Direct Inbound, Outbound and Hazardous teams to ensure accurate stowage plans are produced
- Follow finalization procedures to ensure no containers are left behind, and accuracy in reconciliation of final numbers
- Other Duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- High school degree required, undergraduate degree in planning or other related field from an accredited college or university a plus, but not necessary
- Skilled in Microsoft applications
- Strong computer skills
- Proven problem resolution skills, decision making ability
- Must be able to work under tight deadlines
- Must be able and willing to work days, evenings, nights, and holidays
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team and take on new tasks
Supervisory Responsibilities: No
Work environment:
- Office environment, requiring working in a cubicle while using phones, computers, fax machines, printers, keyboards, mouse and multiple video displays
- Fast-paced work environment with high call volumes and emails
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
- Travel may be required domestically up to 5% annually.
