What are the responsibilities and job description for the Solutions Architect position at SS Solutions?
We are seeking an experienced Solutions Architect to lead enterprise application and integration architecture for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). The architect will define end-to-end solution designs across Azure (cloud-native and hybrid), on-premises systems, and COTS/SaaS platforms; produce architecture artifacts; and ensure security, scalability, performance, and interoperability. The role partners with business and technology stakeholders, enterprise architects, and Agile delivery teams (SAFe/Scrum) to translate strategy into executable roadmaps and govern technical implementation across programs.
The Solutions Architect (VDOT) will be responsible for:
Create and govern solution & application architectures, integration patterns, and reference designs across on-prem, hybrid, and Azure environments.
Capture and document requirements for data, workflow, interfaces, security controls, topology, and operations; develop conceptual, logical, and physical designs, sequence diagrams, data models, and technical estimates.
Lead feasibility and impact analyses; prototype and validate approaches; ensure consistent integration with existing enterprise and COTS systems
Define and implement enterprise security/technology patterns; align designs to compliance, resiliency, and performance objectives.
Collaborate with enterprise architects to craft technology roadmaps that support agency KPIs and modernization goals.
Provide architecture oversight to Agile delivery teams (PI planning, backlog refinement, dependency mapping); ensure design conformance through delivery.
Advise on legacy modernization, migration strategies, and cloud adoption; guide cost, licensing, and scalability considerations (SaaS/PaaS).
Produce high-quality documentation (estimates, options analysis, standards, guardrails) and present solutions to technical and business leaders.
Coach teams on DevOps/automation enablement and integration quality gates (security scans, API governance, performance testing)..
Expertise and/or Relevant Experience:
Mandatory Qualifications & Experience - Solutions Architect (VDOT)
M1. 8 years in enterprise-level application design and systems integration
M2. 8 years with Azure architecture (cloud-native and hybrid), including landing zones and network/security patterns
M3. 8 years designing SaaS architectures and integrating COTS with custom solutions
M4.
8 years in integration architecture and hands-on engagement with Agile/Scrum/SAFe teams.
M5. 5 years implementing Azure services: AKS, Azure Functions, Azure App Services, Azure API Management, Containers/Docker.
M6. 2 years with Azure Data Factory and Azure Data Lake
M7 Working proficiency with API protocols (REST/SOAP), XML/JSON schemas, and secure integration patterns.
M8 Strong knowledge of relational database design/management and data modeling
M9 Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement, and architecture documentation skills.
M10 Onsite requirements: Able to pick up equipment in Richmond, VA; commit to probationary onsite cadence and periodic onsite needs thereafter.
Desired Skills & Competencies - Solutions Architect (VDOT)
D1. Experience with Microsoft Power Platform (Power Apps, Power Automate, Dataverse) and Dynamics 365 (≥2 years).
D2. Familiarity with Esri ArcGIS ecosystems and spatial data integrations.
D3. Prior state/local government or large transportation domain experience.
D4. Establishing architecture governance, standards, and reusable patterns; leading modernization/migration programs.
D5. Cost optimization, licensing strategy, and performance engineering for Azure workloads.
D6 Strong facilitation in SAFe (PI planning, dependency/risk management) and executive-level presentations.
