The Support Associate Attorney will work closely with supervising attorneys to provide dependable legal support throughout all stages of a case. Depending on experience, the attorney may also handle selected matters, hearings, and client communications with appropriate supervision.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Conduct legal research and prepare clear, practical written analyses.
  • Draft pleadings, motions, declarations, discovery requests and responses, proposed orders, settlement documents, and correspondence.
  • Review and summarize financial records, discovery materials, expert reports, and other case-related documents.
  • Assist supervising attorneys with case strategy, trial preparation, mediation, arbitration, and settlement conferences.
  • Prepare hearing and trial materials, including exhibits, witness outlines, timelines, and briefing.
  • Communicate with clients regarding case updates, document requests, deadlines, and preparation for hearings or meetings.
  • Attend client meetings, depositions, mediations, settlement conferences, and court proceedings.
  • Handle selected motions, hearings, or cases based on experience and demonstrated readiness.
  • Coordinate with paralegals, legal assistants, experts, opposing counsel, and court personnel.
  • Accurately record time and maintain organized, complete, and current case files.
  • Monitor deadlines and ensure compliance with applicable court rules, statutes, and firm procedures.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.
  • Perform other attorney duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.
  • Active license and good standing with the applicable state bar, or eligibility for prompt admission.
  • Strong legal research, analytical, and writing skills.
  • Excellent organization and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Professional and compassionate communication skills.
  • Ability to receive feedback, collaborate with supervising attorneys, and contribute positively to a team.
  • Sound judgment and commitment to ethical practice.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to learn legal practice-management and document-management systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior family law experience through legal practice, judicial clerkship, externship, or law-school clinic.
  • Experience drafting family law pleadings and handling discovery.
  • Familiarity with domestic-relations statutes, local court rules, and family law procedures.
  • Courtroom, mediation, negotiation, or client-counseling experience.
  • Experience reviewing financial records involving support, property division, business interests, or other complex assets.
  • Admission to practice in Oregon and/or Washington, depending on the position’s assigned office.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is thoughtful, reliable, and eager to grow as a family law attorney. This person can work independently when appropriate but understands the importance of collaboration and supervision. Because family law clients are often navigating stressful and deeply personal circumstances, the successful candidate must be able to communicate with empathy while maintaining professional boundaries and focusing on practical legal solutions.
