What are the responsibilities and job description for the Head Coach position at Spurling Fitness?
Pay: $50,000.00 - $65,000.00 per year
Job description:
Head Coach — Spurling Fitness | York, ME
Lead our newest location from day one
Full-Time | Mornings only, no nights or weekends | Base $50,000–$65,000 | OTE $70,000–$80,000
Spurling Fitness exists to make people stronger, more capable, and more connected than the day they walked in. Since 2012 we've done that across Southern Maine, mostly for people over 50 who want real results inside a community that actually knows their name. Now we're opening in York, and we need someone to build that same thing from the ground up.
This isn't a coaching job. It's a founding leadership role. You won't inherit a member base or a culture on autopilot. You'll be the person who creates both.
The Honest Picture
York is brand new. There's no existing roster to coast on and no community already in place. What there is: a model proven across three locations, marketing that generates leads, a sales process that works, and a leadership team that has opened locations before and will be in it with you.
You won't be figuring this out alone. You will be the one executing it on the ground, day after day, until York knows your name the way Kennebunk knows ours. The coach who builds this place earns from it, in pay, in pride, and in what it does for the rest of their career.
What the Role Actually Looks Like
Here's the work, and it's the kind of work that matters:
Coaching. Lead 15 to 20 small group personal training sessions a week. Own session prep, programming updates, and the standard on the floor every single day. The hour a client spends with us should be the best hour of their day, and you're the one who makes that true.
Client Accountability. Run weekly check-ins and stay close to the clients who are slipping. Your job isn't only to coach a good session. It's to make sure people get results and stay long enough to feel them. Retention is care, made measurable.
Recognition. This is a community, not a gym, and you're the one who makes people feel it. You'll track milestones, send handwritten notes, celebrate wins out loud, and make sure no client ever feels like a number. This part isn't a nice-to-have. It's the job.
Team Leadership. As York grows, you'll lead team meetings, help onboard new coaches, and set the standard for how this location runs. The culture here is built on purpose, and you're its first keeper in York.
Sales and Membership. You'll run sales consults, handle membership conversations, and execute monthly marketing. We treat sales as service, helping the right person finally say yes to changing their life. We're good at it, and we'll teach you to be too.
What You'll Earn
We pay coaches like the professionals they are, and we tie your pay to the thing you're actually building. Your base scales with the community you grow, reviewed quarterly based on active client count.
- Under 65 active clients: $50,000 base
- 65 to 84 active clients: $55,000 base
- 85 to 124 active clients: $60,000 base
- 125 active clients: $65,000 base
- Plus $75 per new client you sign, uncapped
At a launch location, every client is one you bring in, so your commission matters from month one. At 15 new clients a month, total compensation runs from $63,500 in the launch tier up to $78,500 at the top. You move the number, because you're the one signing the clients.
Benefits: 50% dental and vision premium coverage, PTO, a 3% retirement match, and up to $1,000 a year in continuing education reimbursement.
Who We're Looking For
Our best hires haven't shown up with the biggest resumes. They've shown up with an exercise science background, some sales experience, and an obsession with doing things the right way. The mindset is the resume.
You're a fit if:
- You genuinely like people and want to see them win, especially clients who don't think of themselves as "gym people" yet
- You believe coaching is a relationship, and that the best hour of someone's day is something you can create on purpose
- You want to build something, not just clock into it
- You hold yourself to a high standard, so being measured doesn't rattle you
- You take pride in the details: clean facility, updated records, follow-through on every task
- You're based in or within commuting distance of York, ME
