Hotel Maintenance Technician

SpringHill Suites by Marriott Lansing West

We are seeking a dependable, self-motivated Maintenance Technician to join our team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys solving problems, takes pride in their work, and understands the important role maintenance plays in keeping a hotel safe, comfortable, and operating at its best.

Starting Pay: $18.00 per hour
Position: Full-Time

The ideal candidate is a hands-on professional with experience in general building maintenance who is comfortable troubleshooting a wide variety of issues, completing repairs independently, and recognizing when specialized vendors or licensed contractors are needed.

Because hotels operate 24 hours a day, maintenance issues do not always occur during normal business hours. This position requires someone who is willing and reasonably available to respond to urgent maintenance situations outside of their normally scheduled hours when necessary, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine preventive maintenance throughout the hotel.
  • Troubleshoot and repair plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, drywall, painting, and other general building maintenance issues.
  • Maintain guest rooms, public areas, back-of-house spaces, mechanical areas, and hotel equipment.
  • Respond promptly to maintenance concerns that impact guest comfort or hotel operations, including clogged toilets, plumbing problems, non-working heating or air conditioning, and other urgent repair needs.
  • Assist with the operation and maintenance of the hotel's indoor pool and spa, including routine water testing, chemical balancing, equipment monitoring, and troubleshooting.
  • Respond to urgent pool or spa issues that may affect the safe operation or availability of those facilities.
  • Complete maintenance work orders accurately, efficiently, and with appropriate follow-through.
  • Communicate with hotel leadership regarding the status of repairs, projects, recurring issues, and equipment concerns.
  • Troubleshoot maintenance issues and complete repairs within your knowledge and abilities while recognizing when specialized expertise, equipment, or licensing is required.
  • Coordinate with outside vendors and contractors when appropriate.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe maintenance shop, storage areas, and mechanical spaces.
  • Assist with larger maintenance projects and property improvements as needed.
  • Identify developing maintenance concerns and address them before they become larger or more costly repairs.
  • Support other hotel departments when maintenance assistance is needed.
  • Respond to after-hours maintenance emergencies when necessary to protect guest safety, comfort, property, or hotel operations.

Qualifications

  • Previous hotel maintenance, commercial building maintenance, apartment maintenance, or similar experience preferred.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Working knowledge of plumbing, electrical, HVAC, drywall, painting, carpentry, and basic mechanical systems.
  • Experience with pool and spa maintenance preferred.
  • Pool certification preferred, or willingness to obtain certification.
  • Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, ladders, and other maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects and respond appropriately when operational needs change.
  • Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and follow projects through to completion.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to communicate maintenance concerns clearly to hotel leadership and other departments.
  • Willingness and reasonable availability to respond to urgent maintenance needs outside of scheduled working hours when necessary.
  • Must be dependable, professional, safety-conscious, and team-oriented.

What We're Looking For

We are looking for someone who takes ownership of the condition of the hotel and approaches problems with a solutions-oriented mindset.

The right person will be proactive and resourceful. Rather than simply identifying that something is broken, we are looking for someone who can investigate the problem, determine what may be causing it, identify possible solutions, and take appropriate action.

You should be comfortable working independently and managing your workload without needing constant direction. At the same time, good communication is essential. Hotel leadership should be kept informed about significant repairs, developing concerns, projects that require additional resources, and situations where outside assistance may be necessary.

Reliability is particularly important in this position. Hotels operate around the clock, and an unexpected plumbing problem, HVAC failure, pool issue, or other building emergency may occasionally require assistance outside of normal working hours. We need someone who understands that responsibility and can be counted on when an urgent situation arises.

Because maintenance directly affects both hotel operations and the guest experience, attention to detail, quality workmanship, professionalism, and follow-through are extremely important.
