Position Title: Director of Outdoor Activities
Location: Spring Island Club – Okatie, South Carolina
Reports To: Director of Recreation and Wellness
Position Type: Exempt - Full-Time

Position Overview

Spring Island is a private, member-owned community rooted in land stewardship, outdoor tradition, and meaningful connection. The Director of Outdoor Activities is responsible for the leadership, care, and thoughtful evolution of the club’s Outdoor Activities program, with particular emphasis on Sporting Clays and shooting sports. The Director also oversees and organizes fishing opportunities and programming on island and helps to facilitate saltwater excursions.  This role blends hands-on expertise with refined service, ensuring that each member and guest experience reflects Spring Island’s values of safety, authenticity, and quiet excellence.

The ideal candidate is a relationship-driven leader who understands private club culture, respects tradition, and brings both technical skill and gracious hospitality to everything they do.


Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Program Stewardship

  • Provide day-to-day leadership and long-term vision for Spring Island’s Outdoor Activities, ensuring programs align with the community’s values and lifestyle.
  • Serve as a trusted presence for members, cultivating relationships and fostering a welcoming, respectful environment.
  • Lead, mentor, and support Outdoor Activities staff, setting clear expectations while nurturing professionalism and pride in service.
  • Uphold Spring Island’s standards of discretion, safety, and personalized member engagement.

Sporting Clays & Shooting Sports

  • Oversee all aspects of the Sporting Clays program, including range operations, staffing, course presentation, and instruction.
  • Ensure the highest level of safety and care in all shooting activities, consistent with best practices and club expectations.
  • Provide instruction and coaching for members and guests of varying experience levels, with particular attention to beginners and youth participants.
  • Thoughtfully develop programming that encourages participation, skill development, and enjoyment of the sport.

Fishing and Boating

  • Oversee all aspects of the fishing and boating program to include on and off island opportunities
  • Develop a schedule of on-island fresh and saltwater fishing clinics, seminars, and events.
  • Coordinate off-property boating excursions to include guided fishing trips, dolphin cruises, and boating trips to local restaurants.
  • Maintain accurate roster and billing of all member boats in the boat storage area.
  • Maintain accurate list and billing of boat slip holders.
  • Communicate any dock maintenance repair issues to the Director of Facility Maintenance.
  • Coordinate with Director of Grounds regarding pond maintenance and stocking.

Facilities & Equipment Care

  • Ensure the Sporting Clays course, elevated five-stand, and supporting facilities are maintained to an exceptional standard.
  • Oversee the care, maintenance, and repair of clay target machines and related equipment, emphasizing reliability and safety.
  • Oversee the care and maintenance of the club’s kayaks, saltwater boats, and jon boats.
  • Maintain inventory of fishing equipment (poles, etc.) and equipment (trolling motors) for member use.
  • Manage supplies, inventory, and vendor relationships with attention to quality and efficiency.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to enhance facilities while preserving the natural character of Spring Island.

Member Experience

  • Deliver a calm, welcoming, and highly personalized experience for members and their guests.
  • Anticipate member needs and preferences, creating experiences that feel effortless and well-considered.
  • Address member questions or concerns promptly, professionally, and with discretion.
  • Collaborate closely with other departments to ensure a seamless club experience across Spring Island.

Events & Programming

  • Plan and oversee member events, clinics, lessons, and special programs that reflect the spirit of Spring Island.
  • Balance tradition with thoughtful innovation to keep offerings engaging while honoring established practices.
  • Ensure events are well-executed, safe, and aligned with the club’s tone and standards.

Administrative & Planning Responsibilities

  • Manage departmental budgets, scheduling, and operational planning with care and accountability.
  • Maintain accurate records related to participation, instruction, staffing, and equipment usage.
  • Provide regular communication and updates to club leadership regarding operations and future opportunities.
  • Collaborate with advisory committees such as Clay Committee and Fishing Committee primarily regarding member programming and services provided
  • Contribute to long-range planning for Outdoor Activities as Spring Island continues to evolve.

Qualifications

  • Considerable experience in sporting clays, shooting sports, and range operations.
  • Prior experience in a private club, resort, or member-focused environment strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability with a collaborative, service-oriented approach.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and experience maintaining clay target equipment.
  • Deep understanding of firearm safety, instruction, and best practices.
  • Polished interpersonal and communication skills with a natural ability to connect with members.
  • USCG captain’s license is preferred or willingness to obtain with two years.
  • Organized, thoughtful, and attentive to detail.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, and special events.
  • First Aid/CPR certification preferred or willingness to obtain.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Comfort working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks including standing, walking, lifting, and bending.
