JOB DESCRIPTION

 

JOB TITLE: Instructional Specialist-Curriculum & Coaching, HS Social Studies

 

REPORTS TO: Director-Curriculum Secondary Schools 

                                               

WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Exempt                         

 

PAY GRADE: AI 2


PRIMARY PURPOSE

 

The Instructional Specialist designs, delivers, and evaluates sustained, job-embedded professional learning for teachers and instructional leaders to support effective implementation of district curriculum, high-quality instructional materials, and evidence-based instructional practices.  The Specialist develops curriculum-aligned slide decks, model lessons, facilitator resources, and implementation supports as part of the district’s professional learning, PLC, coaching, and instructional support systems.

 

In the High School (9-12) Social Studies content area, the Specialist provides direct, ongoing instructional coaching to campus teachers and leaders - including co-planning, modeling, classroom observation, and actionable feedback - to build teacher capacity, strengthen instructional practice, and advance student achievement.  This position is funded in whole or in part through Title II, Part A and is dedicated to activities that prepare, train, and support teachers and principals, consistent with the requirements of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university
  • Curriculum writing experience
  • Professional development design and presentation experience
  • Instructional coaching experience with adult learners
  • Five years’ job-related experience 

Preferred:

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university
  • Leadership experience at the campus level and/or district level
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate
  • Five years’ classroom experience
  • Experience with multiple grade levels
  • Experience providing job-embedded coaching or mentoring to teachers
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish)

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  • Understanding of curriculum, instruction, and assessment
  • Expert in assigned content area (High School Social Studies)
  • Knowledge of adult learning theory and effective professional development design
  • Ability to provide individualized and small-group instructional coaching to teachers and instructional leaders
  • Ability to model effective lessons and provide actionable, evidence-based feedback
  • Ability to provide direction for campus leadership
  • Ability to evaluate instructional programs and teaching effectiveness
  • Ability to coordinate District functions
  • Excellent organization, communication, and interpersonal skills

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Design and deliver sustained, job embedded professional learning for teachers and instructional leaders aligned to district curriculum and evidence based instructional practices. 
  • Develop curriculum-aligned slide decks, model lessons, facilitator resources, and implementation supports as part of the district’s professional learning, PLC, coaching, and instructional support systems.
  • Provide direct, ongoing instructional coaching to classroom teachers, including co-planning, modeling instruction, classroom observation, and actionable feedback to strengthen teaching practice.
  • Facilitate Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to support collaborative planning, data analysis, and continuous instructional improvement.
  • Direct the implementation of core content curricula across the district.
  • Assist campus administrators in coaching teachers on the critical attributes of instruction and student engagement.
  • Use evidence based practices to monitor the impact of professional learning and coaching on teacher practice and student achievement, adjusting support based on the findings. 
  • Build understanding of the correlation between college and career readiness standards and state standards.
  • Articulate understanding of accountability and special programs.
  • Remain current on educational research and instructional best practices and apply research and data to improve student engagement and achievement.
  • Model, coach, and commit to personal improvement in best instructional practices and techniques.
  • Design and coordinate support for campuses in lesson design and instructional engagement and practices.
  • Plan and provide effective professional learning activities based on analysis of data.
  • Implement policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy, including applicable Title II, Part A program requirements.
  • Articulate the District’s goals and needs to the community and solicit support in reaching those goals.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

 

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: physical mobility, standing, prolonged sitting, some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling. This position requires regular travel between campuses within the district, as well as state-wide travel, to provide in-person coaching and professional learning support. Mental demands: ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of situations; ability to interpret a variety of data; ability to interpret TEC and policy; ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory; ability to be effective in both oral and written communication; ability to maintain emotional control under stress. Required to work extended hours as needed.
