PRIMARY PURPOSE:

 

The Adapted Physical Education Teacher is responsible for providing a comprehensive physical education program for identified students in the Special Education Services Department who, after assessment, qualify for specialized Adapted Physical Education services.

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate in P.E. (Kinesiology)

 

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • All levels Physical Education Certification
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate in Special Education (EC-12)
  • Passed the Certified Adapted Physical Educators (CAPE) National Examination
  • Three or more years of successful teaching
  • Experience in teaching students with disabilities

 

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area.
  • General knowledge of curriculum and instruction
  • Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Using valid and reliable tests and school district approved assessment forms, assess and identify the deficiencies, and provide modifications and accommodations through an Individual Education Plan, for adapted physical education services.
  • Participate in placement decisions based on the educational, sociological and physiological data presented to the Admission, Review and Dismissal Committee.
  • Work with related services personnel as a collaborative team member when implementing strategies to meet the need of a student in Adapted Physical Education.
  • Serve as a member of the Admission, Review and Dismissal/Individual Education Plan Committee.
  • Maintain up-to-date record keeping on student progress by updating IEP objectives annually.
  • Contact parents on student progress through IEP progress reports.
  • Maintain confidential records of assigned students and complete annual or tri-annual reports and evaluations.
  • Develop and implement instructional materials necessary to master TEKS objectives in general physical education.
  • Requisition and maintain physical education equipment and supplies needed for the students’ Individual Education Plan.
  • Develop and implement instructional plans to assist students in attaining mainstreaming skills for successful participation in the general Physical Education classroom.
  • Adapt and modify physical education skills to facilitate integration/inclusion into the general physical education classroom for identified special education students.
  • Determine/provide direct or consult service, as determined by assessment, to those who are unable to be integrated without modification into the general physical education classroom.
  • Consult with the general physical education teacher on adaptations and modifications for their units and activities to assist in the successful participation of special education students in the general physical education setting.
  • Provide paraprofessionals in-service training to instruct them on effective strategies, modifications and accommodations when implementing the Individual Education Plan.
  • Implement the students’ individual behavior plan, during instruction time, as determined by the Admission, Review and Dismissal committee.
  • Maintain current certification in CPR, First Aid and Nonviolent Crisis Intervention.
  • Participate in the initial training of Community Based Instruction and subsequent trainings as directed by the Special Education Department.
  • Develop specialized programs modified for the special needs students, such as Field Day and Special Olympic events to emphasize lifetime recreation/leisure activities in the community setting.
  • Attend on-going staff development in the areas of physical education and special education.
  • Adhere to the policies outlined by the district’s adapted physical education program.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

 

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands:  physical mobility, standing, prolonged sitting, some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling , reaching/repetitive hand motions, and the ability to work with frequent interruptions. May be required to lift or position students with physical disabilities; control behavior through physical restraint; and assist non-ambulatory students.  Exposure to biological hazards. Mental demands: Ability to maintain emotional control under stress; ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of situations; ability to interpret a variety of data, ability to be effective in both oral and written communication. Travel within the district as required.
