PRIMARY PURPOSE:

 

The High School Head Band Director is responsible for implementing the District instructional programs and educational philosophies in instrumental music for grades nine through twelve, as well as for the administrative aspects of the band program.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate – Trades & Industrial Education/Technology Education

Preferred:

  • Three years teaching and band directing experience

 

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of overall operation of instrumental music program
  • Ability to manage budget and personnel
  • Knowledge of state and UIL policies governing band and extracurricular activities
  • Ability to interpret policy, procedures, and data
  • Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills

 

MAJOR REPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Coordinates with the Director of Performing and Visual Arts to meet District curriculum goals and objectives as well as to schedule band activities.  
  • Serves as a leader in ensuring vertical alignment of curriculum from middle to high school. 
  • Organizes the instruction of the instrumental music classes.
    • Plans for accurate assessment of student needs in the area of music instruction.
    • Provides experiences that aid in locating and developing students with special talents in music.
    • Provides classroom experience and performance opportunities which enhance student knowledge of music and involvement in music as a profession or for personal pleasure.
    • Develops technical skills and musicianship for each student according to individual ability.
    • Encourages the sense of responsibility and self-discipline required to reach and maintain goals set for the band program.
    • Creates, through competitions and performance, the desire to excel as a group or as an individual.
    • Maintains accurate records of student progress and attendance. 
  • Organizes the band program for the building.
    • Cooperates with the Director of Performing and Visual Arts to recruit, interview, and employ private lesson teachers.
    • Works with the Associate principal for Administration in coordinating band activities with the building calendar and the Director of Performing and Visual Arts.
    • Oversees scheduling of the private lesson program.
    • Works with the Drill Team Sponsor and Administration to coordinate shared activities such as game performances and rehearsals.
    • Plans performances such as pep rallies, games, concerts and competitions.
    • Coordinates the recruiting efforts from middle school and supervises instrumentation for the high school band program.
    • Schedule and participate in sectionals, rehearsals, performances, competition and festivals.
    • Provides opportunities for recognition of outstanding students
    • Works with the Band Boosters to provide opportunities for parental involvement with band activities and projects.
  • Oversees the administrative operation of the band program.
    • Coordinates activities, trips and contests including arrangements for transportation, meals and lodging.
    • Supervises students during all activities and trips arranging additional chaperones as needed.
    • Assumes responsibility for budgeting, requisitioning supplies and accounting for all band educational and activity funds including monies from fund raising projects.
    • Oversees maintenance and distribution of school owned equipments.
    • Maintains accurate inventory record of all instruments, equipment and uniforms.
    • Oversees care and distribution of uniforms.
    • Communicates the schedule of activities and rehearsals to parents.
    • Directs and evaluates the work of the assistant band director, percussion instructor and colorguard instructor.
  • Oversees the competitive aspects of the band program.
  • Prepares students for participation in University Interscholastic League competition and other festivals.
  • Completes necessary entry forms and verifies student eligibility.
  • Arranges for transportation and additional chaperones for trips and performances.
  • Chaperones students during all competitions and performances.
  • Coordinates reports of competitions with the principal for awards programs and publication through District communications.
  • Exemplifies citizenship, sportsmanship and professionalism in behavior and performance of duties.
    • Promotes community understanding of the band program through communication with parents and concern for students.
    • Encourages interest in the band program by presenting activities of interest to parents and students.
    • Remains current in the area of instrumental music education through professional organizations, literature, workshops, clinics and in-service programs.
  • Complies with the position description for the classroom teacher.
  • Performs other appropriate duties as assigned by the principal and the Director of Performing and Visual Arts.

 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:
 

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands:  physical mobility, standing, prolonged sitting, some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling.  .  Frequent district and occasional statewide travel; prolonged and irregular hours; outdoor and indoor work; exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather. Mental demands: Ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of situations; ability to interpret a variety of data; ability to interpret TEC and policy; ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory, ability to be effective in both oral and written communication; ability to maintain emotional control under stress.
