Adjunct Clinical Nursing Instructor - Undergraduate

SUMMARY

This is an adjunct position responsible for teaching, supervising, and evaluating nursing students in affiliated clinical organizations, Skills Lab, and Simulation Center. The clinical instructor is an extension of the lead course faculty and supports student learning by connecting theory principles with clinical judgment.

Demonstration of Competent Nursing Practice

  • Accountable to follow the accepted standards, laws, and rules regulating the practice of nursing, and function within the scope of nursing practice.
  • Responsible and accountable for practice based on, and limited to, the scope of instructor's education, demonstrated competence, and nursing experience.
  • Obtains instruction, supervision, and consultation as necessary before implementing new or unfamiliar techniques or practices.
  • Responsible for maintaining current knowledge in broad and/or specialized areas of nursing.
  • Conducts nursing practice without discrimination.

Clinical Site Responsibilities

  • Familiarizes self with agency policies and procedures.
  • Completes all required agency training including, but not limited to electronic health records, HIPAA, medication administration and orientation to the unit(s) prior to taking students.
  • Orients staff nurses to the level of the student and the specific learning outcomes for their clinical experience.
  • Encourages communication between facility staff and faculty.
  • Initiates regular communication with facility and unit management.
  • Meets with patients before clinical, coordinates with charge nurse, assigns students to patients.
  • Holds pre- and post- clinical sessions with students each shift.

Department of Nursing Responsibilities

  • Meets with lead course faculty at the beginning of each semester to orient to the course and review student learning outcomes, course syllabus, evaluation and learning resources. Participates in ongoing communication with lead course faculty and discuss instructional issues and individual student learning needs and progress.
  • Confirms student assignments and congruence with theory content.
  • Reviews course grading policies and Nursing Faculty Handbook.
  • Provides feedback about adequacy of site in allowing students to meet course outcomes to the lead course faculty.
  • Works in cooperation with the Simulation Center Coordinator when necessary.
  • Performs tasks as assigned by the lead course faculty.
  • Demonstrates behaviors and attitudes that are supportive Spring Arbor Nursing's students and mission, philosophy, program goals, policies, and professional/Christian values. Serves as a professional role model and representative of the nursing department at Spring Arbor University.

Student Instruction Responsibilities

  • Directs, instructs, and guides students in the clinical setting.
  • Assigns students to selected patients based on student's learning needs and patient assessment.
  • Facilitates students in comprehensive, individualized instruction in the observation, assessment, decision-making, and health teaching of patients, including the maintenance of patient health or prevention of illness or disease.
  • Guides development of student's critical thinking, technical, and professional communication skills while maintaining patient and student safety and patient confidentiality.
  • Supervises the administration of medications.
  • Delegates selected nursing functions to students in accordance with their level of nursing education and demonstrated competency.
  • Manages students in situations of injury or illness in the clinical setting.
  • Directs students to be responsible and accountable for their behaviors in the clinical setting.
  • Grades written assignments, maintain accurate records, and return graded work to students in a timely manner prior to their next clinical.
  • Completes clinical documentation as directed by the department.
  • Maintains confidentiality HIPPA and adheres to FERPA privacy policies.

REPORTING RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serves as a member of the School of Nursing and Health Sciences reporting to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Program Director as well as collaborates with the lead course faculty.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The Adjunct Clinical Instructor will supervise students in affiliated clinical organizations. the Skills Lab, and Simulation Center.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing required; A Master's Degree in Nursing is preferred. Will consider BSN degree with clinical experience of at least 2-4 years.
  • A current unencumbered license to practice as a registered nurse in the state of Michigan.
  • Criminal history and background check clearance, evidence of current American Heart Association CPR training, and a current unencumbered Michigan RN license.
  • Provide evidence of yearly tuberculin skin tests and other required immunizations as per nursing program policy.
  • Possess thorough knowledge of patient medications, treatments, and diagnoses, and has the ability to relate these aspects of patient care to problem solving/critical thinking skill development in the student.
  • Has the ability to deal appropriately with delicate student situations, and able to effectively communicate and negotiate resolutions with faculty, students, and facility staff regarding problems in the clinical setting(s).
