General Statement of Job
This position is for individuals aged 18 to 20 years who desire to become a Deputy Sheriff.
Under general supervision, Cadets gain firsthand experience in a variety of law enforcement to include Patrol Operations, Criminal Investigations, Forensics, and Administrative Support. At age 21, Sheriff’s Office Cadets are considered for transition to the Police Academy to become certified Deputy Sheriffs upon graduation. Please note that upon age 21, Sheriff’s Office Cadets must meet all eligibility criteria and be selected for a Deputy Sheriff position, or their Sheriff’s Office Cadet position will end. Reports to ASD Captain.
Special Duties & Responsibilities
- Performs various clerical duties utilizing standard office equipment and / or department-specific equipment, including filing; responding to standard information requests; and maintaining reports and other documentation to ensure the availability and accuracy of information.
- Performs inventory checks to ensure proper maintenance of department equipment.
- Conducts a count of warrants served within a defined area.
- Transports department vehicles to service garages to ensure proper maintenance and repair of fleet vehicles.
- Performs traffic control under the supervision of a Deputy Sheriff.
- Performs other duties as required.
Minimum Training & Experience
Requires possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Must successfully complete a DMV record check, polygraph examination, criminal background investigation, and be able to meet the public safety/policy officer medical standards prior to selection for the Sheriff’s Office Cadet Program.
Must be at least 18 on the date of application to begin the selection process.
Must be within six months of turning 21 and meet all eligibility requirements in order to apply for employment as a Deputy Sheriff.
Special Requirements
- Knowledge of the policies, procedures, methods, and standards of the Sheriff’s Office.
- Knowledge of the geographic layout of the County.
- Ability to use a variety of office machines, including a computer, calculator, and copier, as well as software products to research, analyze, document, and track information.
- Knowledge of basic inventory management principles.
- Knowledge of basic filing and record-keeping principles.
- Ability to prepare reports of inspection findings, violations, and recommendations.
- Ability to understand and follow and/or convey written and/oral instructions; and to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to exercise tact and courtesy in contacts with County personnel, citizens, public officials, etc.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
- Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.
- Ability to communicate professionally and respectfully. Must be adaptable to performing under moderate levels of stress.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position requires work in both office and field environments. Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment and tools, such as a computer, printer, copier, fax machine, calculator, or telephone. Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle. Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant, physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, standing, stooping, kneeling, and may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (10 pounds). Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape. Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately when using automated office equipment. Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, office equipment, etc. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination. Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, office equipment, control knobs, switches, etc. Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of colors. Requires the ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing: perceiving the nature of sounds by ear.) Must be able to communicate via telephone.
