What are the responsibilities and job description for the Threat Assessment Coordinator position at Spotsylvania County School District?
Spotsylvania County Public Schools is seeking a Threat Assessment Coordinator to coordinate and implement a comprehensive threat assessment program, serving as an identifier and case manager to support students who present a potential risk of violence/aggression, self-harm, or other self-destructive behavior. This position collaborates with safety personnel and intervention specialists (law enforcement, mental health specialists, school counselors and social workers, etc.) to respond to situations and students of concern. The Threat Assessment Program will serve over 24,000 students throughout more than 30 site locations within Spotsylvania County Public Schools.
Essential Job Functions:
- Serves as the primary coordinator and subject matter expert for behavioral threat assessment across all SCPS schools.
- Develops and leads the Division Threat Assessment Team, as permitted under Policy EBB, and provides oversight, coaching, and quality assurance for all school-based teams.
- Facilitates a comprehensive threat identification and assessment program for Spotsylvania County Public Schools.
- Ensures consistent implementation of SCPS threat assessment procedures, aligned with Department of Criminal Justice (DCJS) and VDOE best practices.
- Manages, reviews and monitors reports of concerning behavior through various digital platforms (anonymous tip line, student digital threats of self-harm, drugs, violence, or weapons).
- Identifies and coordinates with team members, multi-disciplinary partners, and other entities to proactively manage the threat of violence by identifying, securing and providing available resources for intervention.
- Maintains a working knowledge of current cases and coordinates communication with involved parties to include outreach, follow up and monitoring.
- Conducts ongoing training and development to School Division staff on threat assessments and other training to minimize workplace violence.
- Provides real-time consultation to division leaders and principals to help ensure the physical safety of all district personnel and students; coordinates with school administrators and/or school resource officers on threats made to school facilities, staff, and students.
- Collaborates with Division level Safety Committees and Task Force meetings.
- Provides ongoing, proactive leadership in the evaluation of the effectiveness of existing threat assessment programs and procedures.
- Collects and manages safety-related data including threat assessments and Student Behavior Administrative Responses (SBARs) for quarterly grant reporting and end of year administrator Safety Audit completion.
- Supports integration of threat assessment into broader crisis planning under Policy EB – School Crisis, Emergency Management, and Medical Emergency Response Plans.
- Ensures alignment between threat assessment, suicide risk protocols, PBIS/VTSS, mental health programming, and restorative practices.

Education and Experience:
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Criminal Justice, Administration, Security, Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, or a related field from an accredited college or university
- Three (3) years of experience serving in Administration, Law Enforcement Supervision, or School Safety Management
- Must have completed or be willing to complete a certification process through the Department of Criminal Justice Services.
- Must have completed or be willing to complete certifications in First Aid, CPR, AED, OSHA 30, CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) and Crowd Control Management.
- Current (valid, not expired) Virginia State Driver’s License.
Special Requirements:
- This position is designated as "Essential Personnel", which requires that employees be on call 24 hours, 7 days a week for emergency situations, including weather and other building emergencies

Employment Terms: Employment may be offered as a 12-Month (243 Day), full-time position. The work schedule for this position is 7.5 hours worked per day, excluding lunch. This position is evaluated annually. This position is grant funded.
