What are the responsibilities and job description for the SIA - K-2nd Grade Intervention Teacher position at Spokane International Academy?

Spokane International Academy is seeking a dynamic and accomplished educator to assume a position as a Kindergarten-2nd Grade Intervention Teacher. The K-2 Intervention teacher will report directly to the Director of Curriculum and Instruction in collaboration with the Head of School.This position is responsible for delivering evidence-based strategies and practices to provide effective intervention services to identified students in literacy. The Intervention Teacher will help design and deliver a comprehensive literacy instructional program across Kindergarten-2nd in reading and writing to include: Interpreting and monitoring data, oral language development, text comprehension, vocabulary instruction, phonemic awareness, phonics instruction, and fluency instruction. The Intervention Teacher will collaborate with grade level teams, classroom teachers, para educators, and building teams for the purpose of increased student achievement. The Intervention specialist may also be asked to provide building-level training in collaboration with the school Leadership team.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with teachers to use assessments, student work, and other data to analyze current practice and identify areas for improvement
  • Give presentations, facilitate meetings, and work in classrooms with teachers and students
  • Demonstrate evidence of their own continuing professional development
  • Oversee and coordinate literacy screening, diagnostic testing, and progress monitoring for literacy
  • Represent SIA at functions such as teacher, parent, orientation, yearly transition meetings, and other after school and evening functions when asked by school leadership
  • Continually review student needs, teaching methods, and instructional materials to provide vertical and horizontal alignment of expectations across grade levels


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in education
  • Valid WA state teaching license and applicable endorsement(s)
  • Experience teaching primary grades, preferably in a Title 1 school
  • Excellent communicator, able to articulate the vision and strategic mission of the school and work collaboratively with families, teachers, administration, and board of directors
  • Demonstrated teaching experience working with students from varying socioeconomic, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds
  • Conduct and interpret formative and summative assessments to evaluate and analyze student progress
  • Maintain and communicate student progress to stakeholders
  • Use a variety of intervention strategies to ensure student success and growth
  • Meet regularly with teachers, paraprofessionals, and specialists to discuss individual student's modifications or adaptations, ongoing learning issues, interventions or problems
  • Work collaboratively to ensure individual student's needs are met by enriching or modifying lessons, curriculum, materials, and resources as needed
  • Demonstrated dynamic, positive qualities, and personal characteristics necessary to build trust and effective working relationships with staff, parents, and students
  • Desire to teach an inquiry-based approach to learning
  • Desire to teach with a global focus throughout the curriculum
  • Experience implementing research-based reading and writing interventions to students who are reading/writing below grade level
  • Understanding of literacy intervention programs and structures that can be applied to Response to Intervention and ability to apply this understanding to assist in the design of effective intervention systems
  • Thorough understanding of Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and ability to facilitate workshops focused on using these expectations to guide and improve instruction
  • Willingness to support a vision for training and support for reading instruction
  • Effective communication and organizational skills
  • Skills in digital technology applications and their integration into the classroom


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of balanced literacy and best practices in literacy instruction at multiple elementary grade levels
  • Experience in providing targeted interventions in the classroom; trained in Running Records, Guided Reading Plus and Comprehensive Focus Groups
  • Extensive training in early literacy development theories and instructional strategies to support struggling readers and writers
  • Knowledge and experience with implementing culturally relevant and responsive teaching practices and pedagogy
  • Ability to demonstrate evidence of student growth and acceleration
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Adaptable, flexible learner and problem-solver
  • Minimum of 3 years experience working with vulnerable learners
