The Opportunity
SPJST is seeking a mission‑driven, strategically focused President & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to provide overall executive leadership and guide the organization’s long‑term success. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the President/CEO is responsible for organizational performance, financial results, and strategic direction.
The successful candidate will lead organizational transformation, building the capability for continuous improvement and change to achieve consistent, positive business outcomes. Priorities include strengthening financial performance, modernizing operations, and growing membership, while honoring SPJST’s historic nonprofit, fraternal, and member‑owned values.

Founded in 1897, SPJST (Slovanska Podporující Jednota Statu Texas) is a Texas‑chartered nonprofit fraternal benefit society with deep roots in mutual aid, member ownership, and community life. Today, SPJST serves approximately 35,000 members, manages $275 million in assets, and operates with a professional staff of 36 employees, supported by a lodge‑based fraternal structure.
SPJST is governed by a Board of Directors and guided by democratically elected leadership, reflecting a longstanding commitment to nonprofit purpose, accountability, and ethical stewardship.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Organizational Culture
- Establish and lead a clear, mission‑aligned strategic direction that improves financial strength, supports membership growth, and advances modernization.
- Partner with the Board of Directors to set long‑term priorities, report on organizational performance, and lead change with transparency and discipline.
- Lead, mentor, and support senior leadership, strengthening accountability and leadership capacity across the organization.
Financial, Insurance, Operational & Risk Oversight
- Ensure sound financial stewardship, protection of member assets, and long‑term organizational sustainability.
- Provide executive leadership over senior staff, ensuring effective operations, appropriate resource allocation, and strong organizational performance.
- Oversee insurance operations and product performance in collaboration with insurance leadership to support sound practices and financial viability.
- Ensure regulatory compliance, risk management, and fiduciary responsibility consistent with nonprofit and insurance standards.
Membership Growth, Outreach & Engagement
- Lead strategies to grow, retain, and engage membership, ensuring relevance to current and future generations.
- Integrate member financial benefits with meaningful fraternal engagement, community involvement, and modern outreach efforts.
- Encourage innovative approaches to reach younger and more diverse audiences while preserving SPJST’s identity and traditions.
- Collaborate with fraternal leadership and navigate member‑driven governance and lodge‑based structures respectfully and effectively.
Leadership Requirements
Leadership Experience (Required)
- Minimum 10 years of senior leadership experience demonstrating long‑term stewardship, trust, and sustained organizational impact.
- Prior CEO experience preferred but not required.
- Experience leading within a mission‑driven or service‑oriented organization, or a demonstrated ability to align leadership style with organizational purpose and values.
External Representation & Credibility (Required)
- Proven ability to represent an organization with professionalism, credibility, and sound judgment.
- Experience building relationships with regulators, industry peers, partners, and members.
Regulated Environment & Fiduciary Responsibility (Preferred)
- Senior leadership experience in an insurance organization or comparable regulated environment
- Experience with risk management, compliance, and fiduciary oversight
Organizational Stewardship (Preferred)
- Experience supporting long‑term sustainability and operational effectiveness through enterprise‑level leadership and responsible resource management.
Board Partnership & Governance (Preferred)
- Experience working effectively with a board of directors, characterized by transparency, accountability, and clear communication.
