Position Title Public Safety Officer Position Summary This position provides security on Spelman College property for the protection of staff, faculty, students, visitors, and property of the institution. Conducts patrols and writes security related reports. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Ensures the safety and security of Spelman College staff, facilities, students, and visitors. Ensures that all campus rules and regulations are enforced. Enforces campus traffic laws, rules and regulations. Conducts investigations, collects evidence, and testifies in court. Conducts foot and/or motorized patrols of assigned areas. Writes incident reports and interviews victims and witnesses. Functions as communications dispatcher answering phones and short-wave radios and performs related clerical tasks. Required Qualifications High School Diploma or GED. This position requires the ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively to determine the proper course of action and maintain a high degree of self discipline. Under emergency conditions, react quickly and calmly. The ability to cope with situations firmly, courteously, tactfully, and with respect for the rights of others is required. The ability to obtain accurate information through interview, interrogation, and observation is required. The incumbent must be able to work cooperatively with the public and fellow employees. Good communication skills are required to express ideas clearly and obtain accurate information through interview, interrogation, and observations. The ability to understand and execute difficult oral and written instructions is a must. Written communication skills are required to prepare comprehensive records and reports. To perform this job successfully, an individual must have beginner level skills using Microsoft Office Suite (Word and Excel) to prepare comprehensive records, reports and e-mails. Must be able to work on an as needed basis and rotate to various shifts as staffing needs change or as required for special details. This position requires passing a pre-employment drug test. Preferred Qualifications Two or more years of full-time experience in a position with a high degree of public contact or security capacity are preferred. Certifications, Licenses, Restrictions Must be eligible for certification as a Peace Officer under Georgia P.O.S.T. guidelines at the time of employment. Current valid Georgia driver’s license is required. Physical Demands While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to: stand, walk, sit, use hands to handle office supplies, operate computer and other office equipment, talk, and hear. The employee is frequently required to: reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to: stoop, climb, or crawl, taste and smell, and lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Ability to physically defend him/herself, others, and to effect the apprehension of criminal suspects, or those whose conduct is in violation of college rules or regulations and represents a danger to others. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
