What are the responsibilities and job description for the Fleet Maintenance & Operations Manager position at Spectrum Search Group?
Spectrum Search Group has been retained by a small, up-and-coming tech/transportation business to find a hands-on Fleet Maintenance & Operations Manager. You'll run a fleet of about 600 vehicles across six markets and report directly to leadership.
Why this role stands out
- Real ownership: the company has fewer than 35 employees, so you'll run the fleet and have a direct line to the hiring manager
- A growing business: 5 years in operation, now in 6 markets across Texas, Georgia and Arizona (DFW, Austin, San Antonio, Houston, Atlanta and Phoenix)
- A large, busy fleet: about 600 vehicles, with around 500 out on rent at any time. Cars average roughly 6,000 miles per driver per month, so the work moves fast.
- Central to how the company makes money: it earns from rentals and from selling vehicles when they leave the rental pool, so fleet decisions affect both
- A chance to build systems: you'll set the maintenance procedures, reporting standards and vendor networks for every market
What you'll do
- Run daily operations at the Garland maintenance facility and supervise porters, lube techs and mechanics
- Know the status and location of every vehicle in real time. If a car isn't on the road, you'll know where it is, why it's down, who is fixing it, what it will cost and when it will be back.
- Prioritize repairs, order parts, manage inventory and control repair spending
- Use your DFW network of repair shops, mobile mechanics and parts suppliers, and build dependable vendor networks in the other markets
- Negotiate pricing, review estimates, and hold vendors to turnaround times and quality standards
- Work with branch managers in each market to reduce downtime and keep vehicles available to rent
- Get hands-on in the garage when it's needed
What you bring
- Experience managing automotive repair operations, fleet maintenance or a high-volume service facility, ideally overseeing hundreds of vehicles
- A mechanic's skill set: you can diagnose and perform common vehicle repairs
- Established relationships with automotive repair vendors and subcontractors throughout DFW
- Experience supervising mechanics, technicians or porters
- A solid grasp of preventive maintenance, repair scheduling and parts procurement
- Comfort with fleet management software, spreadsheets and repair tracking systems
- A habit of taking ownership and following through, without waiting for someone else to spot problems
- A valid driver's license and reliable transportation
